Frequently Asked Questions
All of your questions about the Greenville University Writing Center answered here.
What is the GU Writing Center?
The Writing Center helps students develop as writers, readers, speakers, listeners, and thinkers. Our free service is available to all GU students, regardless of their discipline. Our services range from lab reports to scholarship essays to oral presentations. We also assist you at every stage of the writing process, from understanding your assignment to brainstorming ideas to rewriting.
Instructors in every discipline are encouraged to recommend our services and other resources to our students.
What takes place during my appointment?
After you receive an appointment email confirmation, students will be paired with a consultant.
Consultations are interactive and designed to help you uncover and organize your ideas, and revise and edit your work during the session.
Will my consultant edit my work for me?
Peer consultants are more like coaches than instructors. While consultants do not provide copy-editing services, they can evaluate assignments and help students further develop literacy skills for more lasting success.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel?
Things happen, we get that!
If you need to cancel, feel free to do so through your original appointment confirmation email or by emailing writingcenter@greenville.edu. To reschedule, simply fill out another appointment request online or visit the writing lab.
What are the policies of the writing center?
WRITING CENTER POLICIES:
- Our services are based on coaching techniques and are skill-focused rather than assignment-focused. Our goal isn’t simply to help you get an “A,” but to build your confidence in your reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills throughout your academic career. Therefore, we do not offer grading or copy editing services.
- Sessions are limited to the designated time, and consultants focus on 1 or 2 goals for each session. We encourage students to book appointments as soon as possible and use their time in between sessions to work on what was discussed with their consultant.
- We strive to create a professional and supportive environment. All writing consultants have the charge to ensure safety and professionalism in the Writing Center. If at any time a student makes a consultant feel unsafe or uncomfortable—and this includes an unwillingness or apparent lack of commitment to work together toward the students’ stated goals—then the consultant will verbally express this to the student. If the unprofessional or unsafe behavior persists, then the consultant will end the session and refer the student to the Writing Center supervisor.
