Summer RECORD Tips Its Hat to GC Adventurers

By Carla Morris

Summer invites leisurely reading. What better time than a lazy summer afternoon to read about adventures in distant places, especially when the adventurers are folks we know?

Just released, the Summer 2016 issue of The RECORD, “Going the Distance—Bold Pursuits, Enduring Lessons,” recounts stories from GC explorers, some who venture into new lands and others who explore a world of new ideas. They include:

  • Student-physicist Shuto Osawa ’16 from Tomakomai-shi, Japan. Shuto's fascination with tiny particles of lightBrittany Caldwell-Spain led to an internship in Vienna with the world’s leading quantum information research group. Shuto’s resolve over four years to conquer language and cultural differences paved the way for his eventual acceptance into a PhD program at Boston University, with tuition waived and a $30,000-plus annual stipend.

  • Brittany Caldwell '16 (shown at right), Kristen Kanaskie ’16 and others who said “yes” to immersion in language studies for a full semester abroad. “Ridiculously tired, mice/mosquitoes/things that want to eat me, heat with the intensity of a thousand suns,” recounted Kristen after two weeks in Nicaragua. “But the Lord is wrecking me with His love . . . this country has my heart.”

  • Jes Adam ’08 and Chris Borwick ’94, who fanned the flames of an idea that now puts distant audiences in touch with Factory Theatre performances via an “old time” radio format. Captured before a live audience, The Factory Theatre Hour is broadcast across the airwaves through podcast technology. This blend of "retro meets techno" draws on student talent as those from various disciplines perform and help produce the show.

Don't miss news about alumni, including five GC graduates who make "play" (stage play, that is) their livelihood.
