Strategic Academic Refocus

FRESH FOCUS ON STUDENTS AND PROGRAMMING
As we continue to grow, Greenville University is proactively undertaking a strategic academic refocus, including pausing enrollment in a variety of academic majors while also introducing new or updated academic offerings beginning Fall 2025. These prayerfully considered changes are a direct result of our continuing work to sharpen our focus and enhance the student experience, ensuring long-term vitality and maximizing our Christ-centered mission's impact.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Is it true that GU is making some academic program changes for Fall 2025?
A: Yes. Greenville University is strategically refocusing its academic offerings, which includes pausing enrollment on a variety of academic majors beginning with the Fall 2025 semester. This decision aims to align university resources with evolving student needs and its distinct Christ-centered mission, particularly as some programs have experienced low enrollment while students increasingly seek more flexible and integrated pathways.

Q: Why is Greenville University making these changes now?
A: These changes are the result of extensive prayer and strategic consideration, driven by our commitment to more purposefully hone Greenville University's Christ-centered mission. As our enrollment continues to grow, we've observed that students are increasingly seeking more flexible and integrated pathways, often leading to low enrollment in some traditional majors. This, combined with the rapidly transforming higher education landscape, enables us to maximize our impact and meet the contemporary demand for flexible, student-centered education.

Q: Which specific academic majors are being paused for new enrollment?
A: Enrollment will be paused for new students in several academic majors beginning Fall 2025.

  • Majors where enrollment is being paused include Physics, Spanish, Spanish Education, Environmental Biology, Middle Grades Education, Special Education, Math, English, History, and Secondary Education.
  • Agribusiness: Will be paused while a faculty search is actively underway but is expected to be back in 2026.

Q: What does "pausing enrollment" mean for these majors and for current students?
A: For these specific majors, it means new students will not be admitted starting Fall 2025. However, it's important to understand that even as these specific majors are paused, Greenville University continues to offer other majors where students can pursue a degree that leverages learning from these disciplines. For example, while the traditional Math major may be paused, students interested in strong analytical skills will find those integrated into our Engineering as well as new Business Administration or Computer Information Systems degrees.

For current students already enrolled in one of these majors, these changes will NOT affect your ability to complete your degree.  Your enrollment is secure, and we are fully committed to helping you finish what we've started together.

Q: Will core curriculum or general education courses still be available even if an associated major is paused?
A: Yes, absolutely. Our commitment to a robust liberal arts education remains strong. Core curriculum courses (e.g., in areas like Math, English, History, Science) and general education requirements will continue to be offered as expected. Students will still fulfill these foundational requirements as part of their degree programs, ensuring a comprehensive, Christ-centered education, even as certain associated majors are paused.

Q: What happens to current students who are already enrolled in these impacted majors?
A: Greenville University is deeply committed to supporting all current students. Comprehensive methods are being developed now to ensure every impacted student can complete their degree program. Students and their families are encouraged to reach out to their academic advisors for further guidance.

Q: What about prospective students for Fall 2025 who have already applied or committed to an impacted major?
A: All incoming students who have committed or are close to committing for the 2025/2026 academic year and are impacted by these changes are being personally informed of these changes and being offered alternative routes to an equally meaningful and valuable degree opportunity.

Q: How will these changes affect the university's accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission?
A:
These changes will strengthen the university's position for re-accreditation because they speak directly to our custodial responsibility to shepherd resources, structures, policies, procedures, and planning. These changes enable Greenville University to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational programs, and respond to future challenges and opportunities. This is just one example of our systematic strategic planning for quality improvement.

This is a pivotal moment—one of bold faith and renewed dedication to our purpose. Rooted in its Free Methodist tradition, the university believes God still has much work for it to do.
