Core Course Requirements

MUSG100 Recital Class (0 Credit)

Recital Class is designated as a requirement for all music majors, who must attend 12 concerts per semester. Music minors need to attend 9 concerts per semester and must be registred for Recital Class during the semesters they are taking applied lessons. Music majors are required to take this course every semester they are attending classes on campus.

MUAP110 Commercial Keyboarding I (1 Credit)

Provides the skill set for reading and playing piano in commercial styles. Emphasis will be placed on reading chord charts, using the Nashville Number system, improvisation, chord voicing and inversions. A main emphasis will be to have the students be able to accompany themselves on piano/keyboard. The course is taken concurrently with MUTH 110 Commercial Music Theory. (Offered spring semester.)

MUTH110 Commercial Music Theory I (3 Credits)

This course is specifically designed for Music Industry Studies majors. It will enable students to learn basic music theory concepts and some aural skills which will relate to the contemporary music industry. (Offered spring semester.)

MUAP115 Commercial Keyboarding II (1 Credit)

This course will provide students with the functional skills on the piano including the ability to develop basic technique, ability to play chord progressions, read, harmonize, transpose, improvise, and compose. Prerequisite: MUAP 110. (Offered spring semester.)

DMDA120 Introduction to Digital Media (3 Credits)

This course serves as an introduction to the processes, techniques, and aesthetics of digital media. During the course, students are introduced to five fundamental disciplines: Design thinking, graphic design, digital photography, digital video, and audio. The course culminates in a capstone experience in which student work in teams to create a project that addresses a contemporary social, health, cultural, or other issue. The resulting campaign is intended as a portfolio piece via which the student may use to demonstrate both digital media skills and experience working as a team to a potential employer. MUSG124 Projects in Industry I - Live Audio (1 Credit)

Projects in Industry serves as the entry level hands-on running of the Music Production program for students focusing on the area of live audio and lighting. Students in this course will assist in various of music projects collaboration, including performance, live audio, studio recording, management, promotions, lighting, songwriting, creation and distribution of product while gaining a working understanding of the processes involved as they continue through the degree. Music Production majors need a total of six credits of Projects in Industry. Course Fee $50. (Offered every semester.)

ENTR130 Introduction to Entrepreneurship (3 Credits)

This introductory course examines business from an entrepreneurial perspective. It will provide students with an introduction to the potential and pitfalls of entrepreneurship and its impact on the economic development within a community. Throughout the course, students will examine the various methods for starting up, managing and financing a new business enterprise. This process will culminate in the development of a viable business plan. The overarching goal of this course is to familiarize the student with business terminology in order to introduce him or her to the business program at Greenville University. Meets the general education social science or business management requirement. Offered: Every semester.

MUSG150 Faith, Music , Culture (1 Credit)

This course will serve as a basis for creating a foundation in keeping a connection between a student’s faith, how it can be used through the gift of music, and how to use those gifts to affect culture in a positive manner. Various types of music and their connection to culture as well as how today’s culture affects students, music, and faith will be explored. (Offered fall semester.)

MRKT201 Marketing (3 Credits)

Marketing is not just about advertising or social media posts. It’s a broad field encompassing all aspects of discovering customer - consumer and organizational buyers - wants and needs and then meeting them. Setting the mission and strategies, understanding buyer behavior, reaching global markets, researching market options, and making decisions concerning the 4 Ps of marketing - product, price, place, promotion - are all critical areas to understand. Knowing terms and concepts is not enough, however, so application opportunities are given throughout the course. No matter in what field or in what position a person finds themselves, marketing is a part of it. Offered: Every semester.

MUSG224 Projects in Industry II- Live Audio (1 Credit)

Projects in Industry serves as a developmental level hands-on running of the Music Production program for students focusing on the area of live audio and lighting. Students in this course will assist in various of music projects collaboration, including performance, live audio, studio recording, management, promotions, lighting, songwriting, creation and distribution of product while gaining a working understanding of the processes involved as they continue through the degree. Music Production majors need a total of six credits of Projects in Industry. Course Fee $50. Pre-requisite: MUSG124. (Offered every semester.)

MUSG227 Studio Production (3 Credits)

This course focuses on the signal flow, microphone techniques, foundational and in-depth information of Pro Tools and studio recording techniques. It is based primarily on a "hands-on" approach offering substantial studio time for group and individual projects. This course will also include an area of critical listening training to help the engineer build listening skills in understanding frequency, delay, phasing among other related areas. Prerequisite: MUSG226. (Offered every semester.) Course Fee: $50

MUSG240 American Popular Music (3 Credits)

This course will survey various styles of American popular music from the early 20th century through the present. Students will have an active role in class discussions and engage with the material by providing examples from personal experiences. Genres covered include jazz, country, rock, reggae, funk, hip-hop, urban fold, and more. Students are encouraged to have some experience in the fundamentals of music before enrolling. Meets the general education creative and performing arts requirement.

MUSG260 Introduction to Music Technology (3 Credits)

Introduction to Music Technology is an introductory course designed to acquaint students with multiple facets of music technology, providing a strong foundation of tools to assist them in their chosen craft, whether it be in studio recording, songwriting, orchestration, or other associated areas. Students will learn to utilize specific music technology tools and techniques which can be used in related coursework. Specific focuses include basic use of Sibelius scoring software, the use of virtual instruments and loops, importing stems into Ableton for live use, and the creation of accompanying MIDI/virtual instrument tracks within Pro Tools and Logic Pro. The Pro Tools 101 curriculum is also taught in this course, which is a pre-requisite to Pro Tools 110 leading to Avid Pro Tools User certification. Prerequisite: MUAP110 and MUSG226. Course Fee: $50

MUTH305 Commercial Music Theory II (3 Credits)

This course will prepare the student to thrive in real world situations s/he may encounter as an artist and/or composer in the music field. Skills to be learned in this course include: chord construction and nomenclature, scales, basic pop music arranging, ear training, and keyboard/guitar accompaniment. Prerequisite: MUTH 104 or MUTH 110. (Offered fall semester.)

MUSG324 Projects in Industry III-Live Audio (1 Credit)

Projects in Industry serves as a mastery level hands-on running of the Music Production program for students focusing on the area of live audio and lighting. Students in this course will assist in various of music projects collaboration, including performance, live audio, studio recording, management, promotions, lighting, songwriting, creation and distribution of product while gaining a working understanding of the processes involved as they continue through the degree. Music Production majors need a total of six credits of Projects in Industry. Course Fee $50. Pre-requisite, MUSG224. (Offered every semester.)

MUSG326 Audio Editing Techniques (2 Credits)

Course is a study of intermediate techniques in recording, mixing, mastering, and production, and a continuation of MUSG 227. Prerequisite: MUSG 227. (Offered spring semester.) Course Fee: $50

MUSG327 Mixing Techniques (2 Credits)

Course continues the study of MUSG 326 culminating an opportunity to sit for the Digidesign® certification test. Students who pass the test will receive a Digidesign® certification certificate and will be given a webpage on the ProTools main website. Prerequisite: MUSG 326. (Offered fall semester.) Course Fee: $50

MUSG329 Sound Reinforcement II (3 Credits)

This course is a continuation from, and further practice in live audio, from MUSG 229 Sound Reinforcement I course. We will work in a hands-on experienced based manner in providing the student with further practical experience in larger systems. A focus will be to work as a live audio production team in running various events throughout the semester. Special focus will be working on individual mixing as well as group interaction, speed, efficiency, and quality. Students will also complete Certifications in SoundGrid 101 and 102 as well as Dante Certifications Level 1 and Level 2. Prerequisite: MUSG 229. (Offered spring semester.)

DMDA330 Business Practices in the Creative (3 Credits)

This course addresses ethical business practices and legal issues unique to the creative professions. Topics include copyright, intellectual property, and trademark law. Additionally the course discusses the right of publicity and the current legal status of artificial intelligence. Related business and legal issues include business structures common to the creative industries, standard contracts in the creative industries, pricing creative works, and negotiation of fee arrangements, sale of rights, reservations of ownership, and royalties. Many creatives work as freelance professionals, therefore the course discusses the rights and status of independent contractors under the common and Illinois law, as well as the implications of work for hire arrangements to the creative professional. Prerequisite: DMDA 120.

MUSG333 Live Video Production (2 Credits)

The course is designed to provide a strong hands-on foundation of Live Video Production skills. This class will focus on the skills needed for live video recording including camera operations, role of the switcher, and will include basic video editing skills using Adobe Premiere and or Divinci Resolve. Aspects of audio editing, cleaning work, and audio overdubbing will also be addressed. Work will be done onsite during events and editing work will be done in the Video Editing Suite or in the recording studios. Prerequisite: MUSG 326 (Offered spring semester.)

MUSG342 Computer Orchestration (2 Credits)

With the ever increasing availability and usage of Virtual Instruments, it is not only important to know how to use them from a technical standpoint, it is important to know how to use them musically. This course pushes the student to use a wide array of Virtual Instruments in both Pro Tools and Logic in a very musical manner, to get the highest level of realism and incorporate this into any studio, live, game, Audio Post Production projects. It is a skill that will set you apart from the average engineer. Prerequisite: MUSG 260. Course Fee: $50

MUSG350 Faith/Music/Culture Senior Seminar (2 Credits)

This seminar is designed as a capstone course in the CCM degree and is the bookend course to MUSG 150 Faith, Music, Culture. The goal of the course is to empower students to go out into their world after they graduate and reaffirm their ability to make a positive difference through their interactions with their culture. How students can be a Christian witness to a post-modern world will be explored. Meets the general education upper division writing intensive requirement. (Offered spring semester.)

MUSG355 Concert Production (2 Credits)

Concert Production is a course designed to expand the skill set of the live audio engineer - to provide a set of related skills to provide the students with a wider foundation for better marketability in looking for future employment. The skills to be focused on are Lighting Design, Live Multi-Track Concert Recording and Concert Management. We will be doing a number of hands-on practical projects to provide further experience in these areas. Prerequisites: MUSG 227 and MUSG 229. (Offered fall semester.)

MUSG405 Internship (1 Credit)

This course will be taken for pass/fail credit.

MUSG419 Senior Project (1 Credit)

Students complete a large recording project and research paper. This course is available only to Music Industry Study students. Prerequisite: Students must pass the upper-division jury at least one semester prior to the semester in which they enroll in MUSG 419 (see Music Department Policies and Procedures Handbook for jury requirements).
