English Proficiency Requirements & Verification

International students graduating from a U.S. high school are not required to submit English verification documents.

All applicants with F-1 visas and/or foreign academic credentials whose first language is not English must demonstrate adequate English language proficiency in advance of admission.

 

How to verify English proficiency:

1. The student has earned a degree from an English-speaking country, or
2. The student has taken a standardized test

 

Earned a Degree from English Speaking Country

In concordance with the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) recommendations, students with a high school diploma or university/college degree from the following countries may qualify for waiver of the English language proficiency requirement:

  • Antigua
  • Australia
  • Bahamas
  • Barbados
  • Barbuda
  • English-Speaking Canada
  • Grenada
  • Ireland
  • Jamaica
  • New Zealand
  • Saint Kitts and Nevis, UK

If you do not have academic credentials from any of the countries listed above, you can submit documentation to prove that the language of instruction for the degree program was in English.

 

Standardized Test

International applicants are required to take one of the following standardized tests in order to demonstrate English proficiency. Official test score reports must be sent directly from the Testing Service (ETS/IELTS) to Greenville International Admissions.

 

Undergraduate and Graduate Examination

  • International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS) - Score: 6.5
  • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) - Score: Internet Based - 79, Essentials – 9
  • Pearson Test in English (PTE) - Score: 53
  • Duolingo English Test (DET) - Score: 110
  • International TEST of English Proficiency (ITEP) - Score: 3.9
 

Undergraduate Only Examination

  • ACT - 18*
  • SAT - Prior to March 2016 – 430*
  • SAT - After March 2016 - 470**
