A God-Traveled Summer & Alumni Travel
A View of GU – AUGUST 2025
BY ROBYN (JAENKE '88) FLORIAN
“Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.” – Psalm 84:5 NIV
“And how blessed all those in whom you live, whose lives become roads you travel; They wind through lonesome valleys, come upon brooks, discover cool springs and pools brimming with rain! God-traveled, these roads curve up the mountain, and at the last turn—Zion! God in full view!” – Psalm 84:5–7 MSG
In the July issue of “A View of GU,” we talked about the storied legacy reflected and refracted by the lives of each Greenville University alumnus/alumnae based on the revealed Word of God and the received work of Christ in our lives.
In the same way that we who believe in Jesus serve as “letters” attesting to transformational work of Christ in and among our lives, our storied legacy of a transforming Christ-centered education testifies to ways in which a Greenville University education encourages, equips and empowers its alumni to inspire, influence and impact the world. Our storied legacy invites others into the novel solution of character and service in response to the wicked problems in our world.
I closed with stating how much we love to see you all in action, “serving in collaborative, problem-solving roles at work, home, church and in other realms of [your] daily lives.” And this summer I got a better look at our alumni legacy as I traveled through Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana, Michigan and Washington (via two ten-day RV trips and a couple of nonstop flights from STL to SEA-TAC and back π). So good to check in with so many of you around ice cream, coffee, food, music and games.
It was a sweet pilgrimage of sorts, which drew my mind to Psalm 84:5. My heart “was set on pilgrimage” to see you, and in many ways “your lives became the roads I traveled” (LOVE The Message translation here), literally and figuratively. 𧑠[Speaking of The Message, did anyone else know that Eugene Peterson was a student of Dr. Mac’s at SPU and he continued to run his manuscripts by her while she was alive?!?! Fun fact for the day. π] If you want to view more stories about my summer alumni activities, follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/gualumniassociation) or Instagram (@greenvilleuniversityalumni)!
REMINDER!! “Remember that We Are Ivy” Homecoming & Family Weekend 2025, October 23–26! We will again celebrate our shared storied legacy, so get your pens ready to write as we prepare to reconnect, renew and revive amidst other GU alumni and friends!
