Background: Throughout the 1970s, students from Professor James A. Reinhard’s Bible and Culture class visited houses of worship in Chicago. These included a synagogue in which Morris Shapiro worshiped. Impressed by the students’ behavior and knowledge, Shapiro began supporting the annual class trip through the Charles and M.R. Shapiro Foundation. In 1997, the foundation funded the creation of GU’s Jewish Christian Studies program.
