Announcing The Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry

Published: April 13, 2021

Greenville College is pleased to announce its launch of the Donald N. and Kathleen G. Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy and Ministry. President Ivan Filby called the school an exciting and important development for Greenville College.

One of our key strategic goals is to build on our strong foundation with both the Free Methodist denomination and the Christian Church at large, he said. The Bastian School will certainly help us to do this.

Honoring An Exemplary CoupleAnnouncing The Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry

The lives and ministries of Donald and Kathleen Bastian exemplify the Colleges emphasis on helping students prepare for ministry by cultivating clear and careful thinking integrated with a deep desire to minister to a hurting world in Christs name.

Greenville College believes theological education plays a vital role in renewing the churchs faithfulness and courage to follow Jesus Christ, said Assistant Professor of Theology Benjamin D. Wayman. Bishop and Mrs. Bastian have modeled this type of courage and faithfulness over many years.

Widely Regarded Authority

Donald N. Bastian, bishop emeritus of the Free Methodist Church of North America as well as the Free Methodist Church in Canada, is widely regarded as an inspired preacher and Bible teacher, wise overseer of the church and outstanding writer. He is the author of several books including The Pastors First Love and Gods House Rules: Seven Biblical Truths to Transform and Enrich your Family. He also authors the blog Just Call Me Pastor.

As culture continues to secularize, it becomes ever more crucial to prepare young minds deeply for Christian ministry, Bishop Bastian has observed. How wonderful that Greenville College is setting its sights more intentionally on this goal.

Transition from the Colleges current Department of Philosophy and Theology to the Donald N. and Kathleen G. Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry will take place this fall. A formal celebration of the new school will take place October 5, 2016, on the Greenville College campus. The celebration will coincide with the Free Methodist National Prayer Summit, also taking place in Greenville.

Endowed Chair

With the announcement of the new school comes an additional announcement that the College has received a substantial lead gift to endow the Donald N. Bastian Chair of Pastoral Theology and Christian Ministry. President Filby acknowledged that the College will continue to seek financial support to fully fund this chair.

This expresses our love for the local church and our commitment to the important work that pastors do in todays world, said Filby. Our passion is to see students come to Christ, deepen their faith and then equip them to help others experience Christs extravagant love.
