Greenville University welcomes Jeff Barker, chair of the theater department at Northwestern College in Iowa, to give a convocation address and afternoon colloquium on Monday, August 27, when the University convenes for the 2018-2019 school year.

Barker will speak at the 9:30 a.m. convocation service. His presentation, titled “Come Home,” will review portions of John’s Gospel, chapters 13 and 14, with an emphasis on the commandment to “love one another” and the hope of a heavenly future.

At 3:30 p.m., Barker will lead a colloquium in Snyder Hall room 104 on his book Sioux Center Sudan: A Missionary Nurse’s Journey. He began the book over a decade ago, originally intending it to be a series of plays. It gradually morphed into a biographical account of Arlene Schuiteman, a missionary nurse who brought medical care to a mission station in Nasir, South Sudan, in the middle of the twentieth century.

The public is invited to both events.

Besides teaching at Northwestern College, Barker is a director, playwright, screenwriter and author who has written more than 50 plays, including the award-winning play Kin and the musical And God Said, and feature-length films including Of Minor Prophets. He holds an MFA from the University of South Dakota, an MA from Northern Illinois University, a B.A. in theatre from Seattle Pacific University and spent his first three years of undergrad at Greenville University. He was named Iowa Professor of the Year in 2006.
