Greenville University recognizes that there are students deserving of recognition based on what they have been able to overcome in their lives. The Ish Smith Overcomer Scholarship is awarded to traditional freshman or transfer students who have shown an exceptional ability to deal with adversity and challenges in their lives. 

This scholarship is named in honor of Robert “Ish” Smith, a former coach and president of Greenville University. Smith not only challenged students to do their best, regardless of what odds may have been stacked against them but did all he could to champion their success.

Eligibility

Freshmen, transfer, and degree-completion students are all eligible for this scholarship. The scholarship is renewable for up to four years.

The Ish Smith Overcomer Scholarship awards students who have shown the ability to overcome adversity in their lives. Ish Smith Scholars…

  • Display determination in their pursuit of education
  • Show they can overcome hardship, whether physical, mental, emotional, other otherwise
  • Do not let their circumstances defeat or define them
  • Inspire others because of their grit and perseverance
  • Prove they can excel because they do not quit

There is no GPA requirement and no test score requirement. Freshmen and transfer Champion Scholars are required to live on campus.

Follow these steps to apply for the Ish Smith Overcomer Scholarship:

1. Complete our initial application.

2. After acceptance, an admissions counselor will invite you to fill out our Ish Smith Overcomer Scholarship.

This is an easy scholarship to apply for, and recipients receive one of the highest scholarships GU offers.
