College is an excellent time for new experiences, and many people choose this time in life to travel. Study abroad programs can last from a few weeks to an entire semester, but no matter the length of time, your trip will be an incredible experience and a lifelong memory.
Consider these 7 excellent reasons to study abroad in college.
1. You'll realize that it's a small world after all.
Although you'll encounter all sorts of unfamiliar traditions, norms and practices, you'll discover that people around the world share plenty of similarities, too. There's nothing like discussing a common interest or sharing a laugh with someone from halfway around the globe.
2. You'll challenge your taste buds.
Would you have otherwise tried fried shark, grilled plantains, or ox tail? Maybe, maybe not. Some adventurous taste tests will be delicious, and some not so much, but one thing's for sure: by the time you finish your study abroad semester, your palate will have expanded. Plus, it's pretty entertaining to watch people back home react to your most unusual food stories! Wait, there's such a thing as a food-focused travel class? Tell me more!
3. You'll feel like a fifth grader...and that's ok!
When you study abroad, you may find your vocabulary is limited to that of an elementary school student, you frequently find yourself behaving inappropriately in public, and you have a million questions at any given moment. This is a humbling experience, and you begin to appreciate and admire everyone who has successfully immigrated to another country. It takes grit, perseverance, and thick skin. You'll feel so proud once you adjust!
4. You'll gain some serious foreign language skills.
Immersion is the quickest way to learn a language. Before you know it, you'll be chatting happily with your host family, confidently ordering food at a restaurant, and using the regional slang in ways that would surprise your classmates back home.
5. You'll live like a local.
After the hard work of acculturation, you'll feel more and more at home. You'll know the best tiny restaurants, become friends with the shopkeeper on the corner, wave at the little old man who walks his dog past your bus stop every morning. With each passing day, your activities will feel less like an exotic experience and more like a day-in-the-life.
6. You'll show off the pictures...forever.
No matter how long it's been since your journey, you'll never stop wanting to share your photos with any breathing organism willing to listen. After all, you stood at the top of the Atlas Mountains, waded through the Mediterranean, and stood outside of the Colosseum. That deserves a #TBT post on Instagram.
7. You'll learn to love a new country.
Coming home after studying abroad is bittersweet. Even though you're happy to be back, nostalgia tugs at your heart. That's when you know it's time to start saving for a return trip!
