Some crazy college kids like me need more than just classes to keep them busy. Not only that but if you haven't noticed already, let me bring you to the reality that higher education is costly. Although the regular, hourly wage for students is not super high, it helps counter tuition costs. However, the money you earn is yours to do whatever you would like to do with it. No matter what your reason is for wanting or needing a job on campus might be, you need to know how to find these opportunities! First thing, let me explain the difference between on-campus and off-campus positions as well as the pros and cons for each.
On-Campus Opportunities: Shockingly, on-campus jobs are jobs that are on campus. The university is especially excellent in offering students a variety of student jobs in the field in which they are studying. This provides a remarkable experience for the student that can be utilized post-graduation. For example, many biology majors have the opportunity to grade lab books for other classes as a job. On the other hand, many GU students have jobs that have nothing to do with their future career aspirations. These positions are just as beneficial to both the student and the employer.
Off-Campus Positions: Even more shockingly, off-campus jobs are those that are not on campus. These positions are needed just as much as the on-campus jobs! But, for students that do not have the means of transportation, this type of situation is not ideal. The great thing about off-campus jobs is the fact that your wages could be higher than on-campus jobs. This does not mean this is always the case, this just means that wherever you decide to work off-campus chooses your wages.
Now that you know what on-campus and off-campus jobs have to offer let's talk about what positions within these categories are available and how to find out about them.
The first place you want to look is the Opportunities Board. Here you will find a listing of jobs, internships, volunteer options, and other opportunities that have been submitted to the Office of Career Services and offered to GU students and alumni. Once you are here, you can scroll through all the opportunities available and navigate the tabs on the left-hand side of the screen for even more information from the Office of Career Services. The world wide web is incredible, don't get me wrong. But, sometimes I just need to talk to a human being. Lucky for you, there is someone to help! Kelli Pryor is the Coordinator of Career Services here at Greenville University. Go visit her office on the main floor of the library in room 228 for more information about finding a job in college!
