Dean of the School of Education Vickie Cook Speaks at Fourth ICCET Leadership Institute
Published: April 13, 2021
Dean of the School of Education and Director of Online Learning Dr. Vickie Cook accepted an invitation from the Illinois Counsel for Continuing Education and Training (ICCET) to speak at a two day seminar this summer. The fourth ICCET Leadership Institute was held July 21-22, 2010 in Springfield, IL.
The ICCET Leadership Institute was constructed to help provide advanced training in leadership for community and continuing educators at Illinois public community colleges. Dr. Cook was asked to lead and help present this year's ICCET leadership philosophies and concepts including: Authentic Leadership, Avoiding Poor Leadership, Conflict Resolution, Creating a Business and Marketing Plan, and Leading Change. 48 Illinois community colleges attended.
Dr. Cook served on the ICCET executive board from 2004-2005 and was also part of the team that first developed the ICCET Leadership Institute. "My interest lies in leadership and distributed leadership models in higher education at all levels," stated Cook. She set a goal for her time with ICCET of equipping higher education professionals with the tools required to not only provide leadership, but to teach it to others.
This year she supplied the ICCET Leadership Institute with two presentations. The first was called Navigating Higher Education's Stormy Seas Using Authenticity as Your GPS. Dr. Cook's outline for using authenticity as an educator's compass created a formula for higher education professionals to do more than aspire to a specific type of leadership style.
Dr. Cook's second presentation was called Avoiding the Sinking Ship of Poor Leadership. During this presentation she walked participants through a practical look at Jim Collins' books Good to Great and How the Mighty Fall. The presentation illustrated the dangers of falling into habits that do not produce desirable results for colleges and organizations.
With the help of Dr. Cook's training, educators returned from ICCET's Leadership Institute with renewed and energized spirits, and ready for the new academic year.
