Dr. Mathias Zahniser Receives Invitation to Present at the World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies

Greenville College Scholar in Residence, Dr. Mathias Zahniser , has been honored with the prestigious opportunity to participate in the third annual World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES) in Barcelona July 19-24,2010. Zahniser was selected by the Executive Scientific Committee to present his paper, Points of Contact in the Qur'an for the Earliest Christian Theory of the Atonement, as part of the week's schedule of events.

The WOCMES seeks to address, explore and exchange information on the current state of Middle Eastern Studies. The overall intention of the WOCMES is to offer scholars from all branches of the humanities, social sciences and related disciplines the opportunity to share and exchange research, experiences and ideas relating to this topic.

The Congress is aimed at scholars, researchers, educators, students, professionals and other groups interested in studies on North Africa, the Middle East, Muslim states of Central Asia, and other regions of the world which are directly or indirectly affected by affairs in these areas.

Dr. Zahniser is certainly one of the interested scholars! He began his study of Islam as a sophomore in college. A 1960 graduate of Greenville College , he, along with his wife Ann, has experienced life around the globe. Dr. Zahniser received a Master of International Service from American University in 1962, a Bachelor of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1965 and a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University in 1973. Dr. Zahniser served with his wife, Ann, and their sons, James and David, as a fraternal worker with the Free Methodist Church in Egypt from 1965 to 1967.

Dr. Zahniser is a professor emeritus of Christian mission at Asbury Theological Seminary. He taught in the religion department at Central Michigan University from 1971-78, in the department of philosophy and religion at Greenville College from 1978-83 and in the E. Stanley Jones School of World Mission and Evangelism at Asbury Theological Seminary from 1983-2000. Dr. Zahniser returned to teaching in the department of philosophy and religion at GC from 2005-2010.

GC's Dr. Zahniser will join numerous associations, research centers, universities, international organizations and other institutions from across the world as they participate in this unique event through panels, roundtable discussions, and presentations.
