Published: April 13, 2021
The Greenville College Factory Theatre presents an autobiographical play by Pamela Gien, The Syringa Tree , November 11 - 14.
The Syringa Tree is a powerful, deeply moving story of abiding love between two families, one black, one white, during the chaotic apartheid years in South Africa. The two children that are born into their shared household in the early 1960s experience and witness repeated acts of racism, aggression, sacrifice, and love. A personal story, written by Pamela Gien who was born and raised in Johannesburg, the award-winning play has been presented worldwide.
The story unfolds through the eyes of six-year-old Elizabeth as she makes her dramatic and heartbreaking, yet hopeful journey into adulthood. The Syringa Tree celebrates diversity as the audience watches the families love and care for each other from early apartheid to present-day free South Africa.
A vivid example of historical and political awareness, The Syringa Tree promises to be a learning experience for both audience and cast. Vondria Bergen, adjunct professor in the Communication Department, directs the show. "I love mycast of creative players," says Bergen."Although our rehearsal atmosphere is definitely one of play and exploration, the cast takes the challenge of this multi-cultural story very seriously." Bergen continues, "They know it's not enough to memorize lines. These actorsmust internalize four South African dialects as well as South African history, customs, music, movement, and occasionally, South African food.We are not only making art, we're studying sociology, psychology, and ethics!"
Witness this engaging and emotionally powerful true story November 11 - 14. Tickets for The Syringa Tree are currently on sale at Jo's Java and Watson's Drugstore.
