GREENVILLE, Ill. - Greenville College has continued the expansion of the John M. Strahl Athletic Complex by recently breaking ground on a $140,000 addition south of Bowman Drive on the west side of Elm Street in Greenville. The college is constructing two soccer fields and a 100-space parking lot. Slated for use in August 2006, the facility will be named Andrews Fields. The 80 yard by 120 yard irrigated soccer fields will be seeded in September 2005. Greenville College is partnering with Slatton Excavating and Blankenship Landscaping of Greenville in the project. The south portion of the property will contain the parking lot with two entrances on Bowman Drive. The new soccer fields will be located directly south of the parking lot."It's always nice to see action toward a projected plan and seeing plans come to fruition," said Doug Faulkner, director of athletics. "These fields will give us great flexibility with two teams." Greenville College currently uses one field for practices and games for men's and women's soccer programs in the fall. The development is partially financed through the sale of college property previously known as Andrews Field just north of Harris Avenue on the west side of Elm Street in Greenville. The athletic department will also utilize money raised through departmental fundraising efforts such as the annual Panther Pride Golf Scramble and the John M. Strahl Athletic Development Fund. To date, the Strahl Athletic Development Fund has received cash and pledges totaling more than $250,000.The addition of the soccer facility is another step toward the master plan for the Strahl Athletic Complex. During the 2004-05 year, the building previously known as the Rinderer Building south of the baseball and softball fields was officially renamed the Briner Training Center by the board of trustees. The interior has received Astroturf and new lighting. The outside has been repainted, and a sign was added.
