Greenville College Encourages Students to Respond to Possible State Grant Reduction
Published: April 13, 2021
Greenville College is taking action to amplify the voices of students, parents, faculty and staff who are concerned about the state's investment in higher education. The state legislature is discussing the possibility of cutting the amount of the Monetary Award Program grant $520 per student to keep the total cost of the grant down. MAP provides need-based financial assistance to Illinois college students.
"The MAP Grant helps more than 400 of our students each year and many more across the State of Illinois. We're encouraging all of our students - whether they receive the MAP grant or not - to contact their representatives in Springfield. If the MAP grants are not fully funded in the fall, it will affect the entire Greenville College community, so we all must act. This is a great opportunity for our students to get involved in the political process and make sure their voices are heard," said Michael Ritter, vice president for enrollment. The state already cut MAP funding by $125 per student for this spring semester and $250 for the upcoming year. Any additional cuts will have a major impact on students' ability to pay for college.
MAP grants are only given to Illinois residents who attend Illinois colleges and universities. These grants produce well-educated workers who will pay taxes and improve the economic future of the state of Illinois. MAP grants also reduce the disparity in education attainment between students who can afford college and those who cannot. To ensure MAP funding is fully restored, Illinois residents are encouraged to contact their legislators. Act by contacting your state legislators.
