Greenville College Artist in Residence and Instructor of Music Jorge Casas has served as bassist for Miami Sound Machine since 1986. The group is scheduled to perform at the First Lady's Luncheon hosted by Michelle Obama on May 18.
The First Lady's Luncheon has been hosted in Washington, D.C. by the Congressional Club, a bi-partisan club of spouses of members of United States House of Representative, the Senate, Cabinet members and Supreme Court Justices for 99 years in honor of the First Lady of the United States. Michelle Obama invited Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine to perform at this year's event. "The request for Gloria and our band to perform for the First Ladies Luncheon was a real honor and a blessing," explained Casas. "We have performed at the White House over the years, perhaps two other times but this one is truly special because it confirms that quality, dedication, diligence and obedience in using the talent that God blesses us with, has unquestionable rewards; this being one of them. I thank God for allowing me to serve the students, faculty and employees of Greenville College in this way."
Casas helped arrange Estefan's first number one single, "Anything for you," shortly after teaming up with Estefan and forming Miami Sound Machine. Casas has performed, written and produced music with artists like Jon Secada, Julio Iglesias, and Jimmy Page helping to earn Grammy awards and nominations. He also produced or performed in songs for motion pictures including "Evita" and "There's Something About Mary."
"Greenville College is very fortunate to have an instructor like Jorge Casas, with decades of music industry experience and the down-to-earth attitude that connects with students. Jorge has been a part of my musical family for over 20 years. I have enjoyed sharing the stage and life in general with him and continue to trust that our music and live performances are in the best hands possible, his," said Gloria Estefan.
