Greenville College Professor Publishes Book

Published: April 13, 2021

This summer, Greenville College assistant professor of philosophy and religion, Dr. Kent Dunnington, published his book "Addiction and Virtue: Beyond the Models of Disease and Choice (Strategic Initiatives in Evangelicial Theology)". The book deals with the question, "What is the nature of addiction?" In his interdisciplinary work, Dr. Dunnington brings the neglected resources of philosophical and theological analysis to bear on the problem of addiction. Drawing on the insights of Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas, he formulates an alternative to the usual reductionist models. Going further, Dunnington maintains that addiction is not just a problem facing individuals. Its pervasiveness sheds prophetic light on our cultural moment. Moving beyond issues of individual treatment, his study also outlines significant implications for ministry within the local church context.

Dr. Dunnington has served as an assistant professor of philosophy and religion at Greenville College since 2007. He received his Bachelor of Science in philosophy from Southern Nazarene University in 1999. He went n to receive his Master of Arts in philosophy from Texax A&M University in 2002, and his Master of theological studies from Duke University Divinity School in 2006. In 2007, Dr. Dunnington continued his education by attaining a doctorate in philosophy from Texas A&M University, with a dissertation on "Addiction and Action: Aristotle and Aquinas in Dialogue with Addiction Studies."
