Greenville College Receives Generous Funding for Studies in Christian Unity

Published: April 13, 2021

Greenville College is pleased to announce its receipt of a $1,361,750 gift to promote studies of Christian Unity. The gift comes from the Full Salvation Union.

The Full Salvation Union is pleased to provide financial support to Greenville College for several initiatives that will promote Christian Unity, said Dr. David Andrews, General Pastor, Full Salvation Union.

Fully Endowed Chair

The College will use $1.3 million to establish and provide support for The James F. and Leona N. Andrews Endowed Chair for Christian Unity (John 17:21). The chair will honor the legacy of the Andrews by coordinating a program of study that is interdenominational in effort and nonsectarian in spirit, and that leads to greater understanding and unity of spirit among all of God's children.

Greenville College recently announced its transition from a department of philosophy and theology to the Donald N. and Kathleen G. Bastian School of Theology, Philosophy, and Ministry. The Andrews Chair will reside in that School.

Additional Grant

In addition to the endowed chair, the Full Salvation Union has established a one-year grant of $61,750 for programing to begin immediately. The James F. and Leona N. Andrews Fellowship Grant (John 17:21), will provide for steps leading to a certificate in Christian Unity and an instructor/director to manage the program, which may include on-campus speakers and student experiences that engage the topic of Christian Unity, the publication of materials that advocate Christian Unity and the integration of the vision for Christian Unity into existing programing.

General Pastor, Dr. David Andrews notes, establishing a certification in Christian Unity is an important step toward realizing the unity for which Jesus prayed as recorded in John 17:21.

A Mission Deeply Rooted in History

For more than 75 years, the Full Salvation Union has operated on the principle that Gods Kingdom is based on transformation in Christ and the work of the Holy Spirit to eliminate divisiveness. The organization engages in educational, charitable and religious work and endeavors to promote principles that align with Gods Kingdom.
