Indoor Track & Field Kicks off 2012 at EIU

CHARLESTON, Ill. Greenville College mens and womens indoor track and field commenced their 2012 season on Saturday as they competed on the campus of Eastern Illinois University in the John Craft Invitational.
Despite traveling only a handful of athletes to EIUs Lantz Fieldhouse due to the optional interterm session, GC track and field still posted a strong showing in several individual events.
On the mens side, senior Brian White raced his way to a third place finish in the 200M with a time of 22.50 to lead the Panthers on Saturday. Joining Whites effort, senior middle-distance specialist Josh Dees posted an impressive early season finish in the 800M. Dees crossed the time-line in 2:02.00 to claim the fifth spot in the weekend meet.
It was the seniors on the womens roster that paced the ladies on Saturday, with Penny Grant, Philita Johnson and Kristen Schutte stamping their collective mark in Charleston.
Grant, a multi-event national caliber talent, took second in the 60M (8.12) and third in the 200M (26.89). Johnson took home a pair of top ten finishes with a third place mark in the 200M (26.39) and the eighth spot in the 400M (1:03.87). Schutte controlled the field events for the Black & Orange with a seventh place finish in the womens weight throw. The senior unleashed a toss of 14.47M, setting a personal record and placing her in contention for a national qualifying mark.
Greenville College track and field will next take the track on Saturday, January 28 as the men and women compete in the Illinois Wesleyan Titan Open in Bloomington Ill.
