Men's tennis opens season with split

GREENVILLE, Ill. -- The men's tennis team hosted Quincy and Illinois College and split the matches against the teams as they lost 9-0 to Quincy before defeating Illinois College 9-0.

Blake Gocey pushed Quincy's No. 4 to a third set tiebreaker as he lost 6-3, 4-6, 10-6.

Gocey and Chris Heckman played Quincy's No. 3 doubles team to a 9-8 final.

With as difficult as the opener was, the match against Illinois College was refreshing. Greenville flipped the results and won 9-0.

Nate Wieland and Justin Tilford won 9-8 at No. 1 doubles.

The duos of Jonathan Urshan/Code Power and Gocey/Heckman smacked Illinois College 8-0.

Greenville's No. 1 Wieland won 7-5, 6-4. No. 2 Urshan, No. 4 Gocey, and No. 6 Mason Tennell picked up perfect 6-0, 6-0 wins.

Power gained a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 3, and Heckman won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5.

The Panthers (1-1) travel to Knox to face Knox and St. Ambrose on Saturday.
