Men's and Women's Track and Field Compete in Day Two of NCAA Division III Championships; Penny Grant Earns All-American Honors

DELAWARE, Ohio -- The men's and women's track and field teams were represented by four members in day two action of the NCAA Division III national track and field championships on Friday. Leading the way for the Greenville contingent was the All-American effort of junior Penny Grant in the triple jump.

Grant, competing in her second event of the championships, finished fourth overall with a leap of 11.71 meters in her second attempt of the triple jump. Despite fouls in her first and third efforts, Grant's mark qualified her for the finals where she completed a final jump of 11.56 meters after fouls on the first and second attempts of the finals. The final mark did not improved her previous distance of 11.71 which held up for fourth place. Grant's efforts obtained five points in the team standings.

Participating in the preliminaries of their events and not advancing to the finals were junior Brian White, 100-meter dash; sophomore Phillip Thomas, 110-meter hurdles; and senior Rochaunda Harris, hammer throw.

White ran 10.87 seconds to place 11th in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash. The last qualifier for the finals ran 10.81 seconds.

Thomas finished the hurdles in 14.83 seconds, placing 17th.

Harris threw the hammer 47.97 meters in her 18th place performance.

After the performances Friday, the men's track and field season was complete. Participating in four events, the men were unable to receive any points in the official standings. The five points from Grant in the triple jump allowed Greenville's women's teamto place 22nd of 40 teams in the women's standings after the second day.

The championships will conclude on Saturdayand will feature junior Kristen Schutte in the javelin.
