Men's and Women's Track and Field Compete in Shortened Day One of NCAA Division III Nationals; Grant Finishes 13th in Long Jump

DELAWARE, Ohio -- Six members of the men's and women's track and field teams participated in the first day of the NCAA Division III national championships on Thursday in an abbreviated schedule due to weather conditions. Competing for Greenville were Penny Grant in the long jump; Brian White , Mark Mitchell , Phillip Thomas , and Josh Garcia in the 4x100-meter relay; andWhite in the 200-meter dash. Weather conditions delayed Rochaunda Harris from competing in the finals of the women's hammer throw until Friday at 11 a.m.
Grant performed in the finals of the long jump, leaping 5.41 meters to place 13th in the nation. There were 23 competitors. Grant hit the 5.41 meter distance in her first attempt before fouling on the second and third attempts. After the first jumpsof all competitors, Grant waseighth, but four participants later exceeded Grant's mark topush her to 13th.
The men's 4x100-meter relay competed in a field of 16 and did not finish due to a missed exchange on the final leg.
White placed 18th after the preliminary round in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.37 seconds. Twenty-two men ran in the event.
The men's and women's track and field teams will resume action on Friday. Harris will throw in the finals of the hammer throw at 11 a.m., Grant will compete in the triple jump at 5:20 p.m.; Thomas will run in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles at 6:30 p.m., and White will sprint in the preliminaries of the 100-meter dash at 7:30 p.m. All times are Eastern.
