Finishing fifth overall, Greenville was a mere 8.5 points away from second place while amassing 23 lifetime best performances and an NCAA qualifying mark.
There were several highpoints for the mens squad on the day, but highlighted was the 4x200 meter champion foursome of Josh Garcia, Mark Mitchell, Ryan St. Hill, and Justin Honeycutt. The group clinched the number one spot with a time of 1:31.76 that ranks them fourth in NCCAA history.
The distance specialists also provided a number of outstanding efforts in Saturdays competition. Junior Coree Woltering finished third in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:57.44, while senior Cole Prins provided the best performance of his indoor career with a 15:33 5k finish that shaved 21 seconds off of his previous best and earned him third.
The 4x800 relay team of Bryant Simpson, Ian Miller, Alex Wolfe, and Josh Thebeau capped the highlights for the runners with a third place 8:14.10 effort.
Greenvilles field events proved vital to its fifth place finish with the Triple Jump carrying the majority of the teams point load. The three-headed combination of Warith Fennoy, Jumanne Bey, and Matt Polluck have dominated the event throughout the indoor season and did not disappoint in Marion, finishing second, fourth, and seventh respectively. Fennoys leap of 47 4.5 not only earned him the runner-up spot but also qualified him for the NCAA Championships and currently places him 12th in the nation.
Freshman participant Erwin EJ Fridge shined in his first collegiate championship setting personal best marks in both the shot put and weight throw. Fridge placed sixth in shot with an attempt of 46 even, besting his previous effort by nearly four feet, and then followed that performance with a 49 4.5 heave to lock up the fifth spot in the weight throw.
Mens Indoor Track and Field will next travel to Iowa to take part in the Iowa State Last Chance Meet on Saturday, March 5 with their sites set on the NCAA National Indoor Championships commencing Saturday, March 11.
