Men's Soccer Defeats Fontbonne 3-2 to Capture First Tournament Championship

ST. LOUIS - The men's soccer team defeated Fontbonne 3-2 Saturday night to capture their first ever St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship. In addition, the 2008 SLIAC men's soccer all-tournament and all-conference teams were announced during the All-Star Trophy Awards Ceremony following the game.Greenville receives an automatic qualifying bid to the 2008 NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament with the victory. It marks the first time in Greenville's history that any Panther team has qualified for the NCAA Tournament.The Panthers, who are now 15-3-3 overall, find out who they will face in the first round of the tournament on Monday, November 10, when the tournament bracket is released.The title game started poorly for the Panthers as Fontbonne held a two goal lead early in the contest. Andy Gibb-Clark was able to score a goal on an assist by Dan Ringkamp to put the Panthers on the board. Brian Limbaugh made the Panthers' second goal with the assist coming from David Dunlop to tie the game.It was Daniel Taylor's unassisted goal in the second half that gave Greenville the win.Joel Robinson protected Greenville's net as goalkeeper, posting a total of five saves and allowing both Fontbonne goals.In the semifinal game, the men's soccer team defeated Principia College 3-2 on Thursday, Oct. 30. Josh Mulholland opened the scoring on an assist by Jeff Arsenault. Principia then scored two goals, gaining the lead. Matt Reeb managed to tie the game before the half with a penalty kick. Peter Claassen scored the game winning goal on an assist by David Dunlop.Joel Robinson was the goalkeeper for the entire game, making a total of six saves and allowing both goals.Greenville earned the second seed in the conference tournament with its 7-3 defeat of Webster University on Saturday, Oct. 25. Jeff Arsenault scored the Panthers' first goal on an assist by Matt Reeb. Webster was then able to score twice, putting the game at 2-1 at halftime.The Panthers returned in full-force in the second half, outscoring Webster by five. Brian Limbaugh made a goal on an assist by Peter Claassen to tie the game. Greenville's third and fourth goals came from Daniel Taylor on assists from Arsenault and Dunlop, respectively. Dunlop later posted the team's fifth goal.Arsenault was able to score again with the assist coming from Limbaugh.
