Men's Soccer Geared Toward SLIAC Title Defense
Published: April 13, 2021
GREENVILLE, Ill. - Defending the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament championship became the goal of ninth-year head coach Brian McMahon and members of the 2009 Greenville College men's soccer team long ago, but now the journey has begun to make their goal a reality. One year removed from the SLIAC tournament championship and the first-ever appearance of any Greenville College team in an NCAA Division III national tournament, expectations are high as the Panthers embark on their season.
Returning to the Panther squad this year are four players who were recognized as SLIAC all-conference choices last season. Following the 2008 season, David Dunlop, a sophomore of Coleraine, Northern Ireland, earned a spot on the SLIAC second team while teammates Daniel Taylor, a sophomore of Village Ridge, Mo.; Matt Reeb, a senior of Belleville, Ill.; and Terrance Cosby, a senior of Jefferson City, Mo., were honorable mention picks.
Entering the season, 2008 top scorer Dunlop will be depended upon to provide a much-needed scoring presence. Last year, Dunlop posted a team-leading 16 goals, 12 assists, and 44 points and received the SLIAC newcomer of the year trophy.
However, Dunlop should not have to provide all the offense as the team's second and third leading scorers, Reeb and Taylor, join him. Reeb was second on the 2008 team with 12 goals and tied for Taylor for second with 29 points. Taylor added 11 goals as a part of his 29 points.
Cosby provides support on defense as he led a unit that only allowed 1.45 goals per game last season.
The Panthers concluded the 2008 season with an overall record of 15-4-3 (6-1-1 SLIAC) and placed second in the conference during the regular season. However, Greenville avenged their regular season conference loss to Principia and tie against Fontbonne to defeat both teams 3-2 in the SLIAC tournament semifinals and championship games, respectively.
McMahon, who directs the squad, now places second on the Panther soccer all-time victories list with a record of 92-64-20 in eight seasons. His winning percentage of .580 places second among Greenville coaches with two or more seasons as head coach.
Over the past seven seasons, the Panthers have won 88 games, giving them the most wins over a seven-year period in the 50-year history of Greenville College men's soccer. In addition, the Panthers have recorded five consecutive seasons with a record over .600 which is also a first.
The Panthers begin their 2009 season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, at home against Missouri Baptist in a 5 p.m. kickoff.
