Nine-Time UFC Welterweight Champion, Matt Hughes, Visits Greenville College

Published: April 13, 2021

Most people assume a Matt Hughes event will offer violence, yelling or even blood. The nine-time UFC Welterweight champion has defeated over 40 competitors in what many consider to be the most violent sport in America. However when Matt Hughes visits Greenville College, it will be a different type of event.

On Wednesday, November 11, Greenville College invites the community to attend an evening with UFC fighter, Matt Hughes. Matt, originally from Hillsboro, IL, will share his life story as well as his thoughts on being a Christian in a violent sport. Matt begins at 7 pm in Ladue Auditorium.

Matt's presentation coincides with the subject of Greenville's COR 401 program this year - Natural Born Killers: How Should Thoughtful Christians Respond to a Violent Culture. Each senior is required to take COR 401 before graduating from GC. This course is designed to help students understand the integrative nature of their liberal arts education. It brings students and faculty together in a collaborative experience that integrates multiple disciplines, values with learning, and theory with practice. The program accomplishes this objective by focusing on a real world issue within the framework of a Biblical worldview.

With a record of 44-7, Matt has traveled the world and become a household name amongst mixed martial arts fans. Although there won't be any "takedowns" in this ring, GC invites you to attend this free event and hear Matt's thoughts regarding being a Christian athlete in a violent sport.
