When a family is 1,000 miles away, attending their sons or daughters college sports game can be difficult. Departments here at Greenville College acknowledge this concern and are trying new ways to reach out to the long distance community. As a way of answering this concern, the communication departments own WGRN 89.5FM decided to take a new spin on sports radio along with the collaboration of the Greenville College athletic department. Working with a company called Meridix, they are now able to broadcast video alongside the regular sports broadcasts. Panther fans and alumni can now watch the game whether it is home or away. WGRN plays a key role in this feature, being responsible to call all the games that will be broadcasted. Alex Wilson, the current sports director of WGRN, is the voice that brings the video alive. [WGRN broadcasting] would make the video easier to watch and give WGRN an even wider audience. A winwin deal, Dr. Cary Holman, WGRN advisor said. As long as the football team wants WGRN to continue doing this, we would like to do so. The partnering of Meridix, WGRN, and Panther sports proves to be yet another way Greenville College is taking communication to a new level. Although this may be the first time GC athletics participate in an online archive such as Meridix, it shows one of the ways in which the GC community is working to reach beyond its physical borders.
