Tour Guide to God’s Hidden Presence: Dr. Dean Nelson to Visit Campus

Published: April 13, 2021

Writer. Thinker. Professor. Dr. Dean Nelson embraces each of these roles with a passion that is reflected in his extensive career. Greenville College will have the honor of welcoming Dr. Nelson to campus during the spring semester, as the featured chapel speaker on April 12 and 14.

Nelson is the founder and director of the Journalism Program at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA. He received his Ph. D. in Journalism from Ohio University, his Master's degree in Journalism from the University of Missouri at Columbia, and his Bachelor's degree in Literature from Mid-America Nazarene University. On top of directing the PLNU journalism program, Nelson hosts the annual Writer's Symposium, By the Sea, where prominent writers come to discuss the craft of writing.

His success, however, is not limited to the classroom. Prior to his tenure as a professor, Nelson travelled throughout the globe covering stories of human interest. His career took him to places such as India, Kosovo, Africa, Tibet and Central America, where he encountered and exposed stories of severe poverty, religious persecution, and political corruption.

Nelson continues to engage in the world of journalism, with pieces appearing in the New York Times , Boston Globe , Christianity Today , Sojourners and several other national publications. He has won several awards from the Society of Professional Journalists for his reporting. In the 2008 Excellence in Journalism awards he received the top award in three magazine categories, including feature writing, investigative reporting, and the prestigious award, "Best in Show."

In addition to this, Nelson has authored and co-authored 11 books, with his newest work released in September of 2009. The book, God in Plain Sight: How to See the Sacred in a Chaotic World , seeks to provide the reader with a way to see the presence of God amid the chaos of daily life. The work explores the idea that God's grace surrounds us, and shows up in manifold ways. Donald Miller , author of Blue Like Jazz , is among several to praise the book, stating that ""in a world where so much miraculous is perceived as ordinary, Dean Nelson points out the places where we see God in our everyday lives, helping us understand that the mundane might actually be holy."

More details will be made available as we approach Dr. Nelson's visit. Please join us in welcoming him to campus!
