ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Greenville College mens and womens track and field began their 2012 outdoor campaign with a pair of fifth place team finishes in Saturdays WashU Mini Meet in St. Louis.

The Black & Orange showcased 32 athletes on the men and womens side in the six-team meet. Despite limited numbers in the season opener the squad still registered several top performances on both the meet and national level.

On the mens side, it was in the field that the squad shined. Sophomores Matt Pollek and Josh Kuusisto each posted individual wins in their events while grabbing national recognition as well. Pollek garnered a first place finish in both the Long jump (6.34m) and triple jump (13.38m) and climbed his way to the 27th spot in all of NCAA DIII for his LJ effort. Kuusisto mimicked his teammates performance with a win in the hammer throw with a heave of 50.47m. The Arizona native earned a lifetime-PR and a 25th place ranking in NCAA DIIIs for Saturdays toss.

For the women it was the seniors that stole the show. Penny Grant set the pace for the ladies on the track and in the field with a blazing 12.8-second effort in the womens 100m dash that earned a second place finish. Grant followed with a leap of 5.46m in the womens long jump that placed her second. Fellow senior Kristin Schutte dominated Saturdays throws with three top-four finishes. Schutte placed second in the discus (37.17), second in the hammer (40.08m), and fourth in the javelin (35.23) to contribute a team high 21 points.

Greenville College track and field will return to Washington University St. Louis next Friday and Saturday for a two-day meet starting on Friday at 10:00 am.
