Women's Track & Field Competes at NCAA Division III Indoor Championships; Grant Places Ninth in Long Jump

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The women's track and field team sent three members to compete at the 2011 NCAA Division III indoor championships.Representing Greenville were junior Philita Johnson, 400-meter dash; junior Penny Grant, long jump; and senior Rochaunda Harris, weight throw. Grant advanced to the finals of the long jump where she finished ninth in the nation, just missing all-American status by one spot.

Grant lept in the second of two flights, qualifying for the finals with a jump of 17-9.5 (5.42 m). She matched that mark in the finals, creating a mark that was the same as the eighth place finisher.

Johnson competed in the second of four preliminary heats, running a time of 58.02 seconds. She missed qualifying for finals by 37 hundreths ofa second.

Harris threw the weight 52-6 in the first of two flights in the weight throw competition. She fell short of qualifying for the finals by two feet, 10.75 inches.

Greenville did not accumulate any team points.

The Lady Panthers will begin their outdoor season on Friday, March 25, at Washington - St. Louis.
