Rev. Fletcher Simpson ’67 has received the Free Methodist Chaplains Association Distinguished Service Medallion for exceptional chaplain ministry and leadership. Formal recognition of Simpson’s ministry as chaplain took place June 17, in Janesville, Wisconsin, at the annual gathering of the North Central Conference of the Free Methodist Church. Conference Superintendent Carl Brannon ’84 announced the award, and FMC Bishop Linda Adams presented it to Simpson. (Pictured, from l to r: Supt. Carl Brannon, Rev. Brannon called Simpson a “key disciple-maker” whose greatest joys have come in “seeing God work, and people finding personal faith relationships with Jesus Christ.” He noted Simpson’s insight that God “uses us often when we feel least qualified or ready.”
I may not know, but God knows
Feeling unqualified goes with the territory of hospice chaplain, a role Simpson filled for more than 17 years. He once described chaplaincy as facing the unknown and fully depending on God for wisdom, courage, understanding, and grace to navigate an uncharted course:
“You are called to a home, to a hospital, or hospice to help a hurting, upset family. You realize you do not know them or their needs, and then you must rely on God, who does know, and trust Him to use you for His glory and good.”
