Experiential learning is a critical component of a Greenville University education. It is a crucial element of the core curriculum and provides students with practical, real-world experience.

The EXPF220 class (sophomore level) students cooperated to complete a work simulation; they interviewed and submitted cover letters and resumes seeking placement into a department within their class organization. Using the transferable skills they learned and practiced in the fall class, they worked together to determine what each person and department needed to do to meet the organization's needs and achieve project goals.

This semester, the EXPF220 class partnered with Kevin Kauffman of Simply Amish, a furniture manufacturer in Arcola, Illinois, to challenge students to design and pitch a new piece of multifunctional furniture with luxury living and small spaces in mind. Their work culminated in pitching their product before the Kaufmans for consideration of manufacturing their design as part of a line of furniture that benefits student scholarships at GU.

Students worked in teams to design furniture pieces such as multifunctional desks, a compact vanity, desk, and chair combination, and the “Wilbur Counter,” a kitchen island with storage that expands into a dining table with stools.

On presentation day, each group outlined the features and benefits of their design. The Kaufmans ultimately chose a winner based on the most original design. The winning product, the Safehaven Desk, features drawers and shelving for storage, an elevated ledge for monitors, cable organization, a suite of removable accessories that includes a detachable cup holder, phone stand, desk extensions, and a small built-in safe for storing valuables. The winning teams’ pitch was that the Safehaven Desk would unlock productivity and style in a luxurious multi-functional desk that provides elegance and functionality.
