For many students, the path to higher education is filled with uncertainties, especially when financial barriers seem insurmountable. This was the reality for Joanna Sherrod, a Greenville University student whose life was transformed thanks to the generosity of donors. Now, as she reflects on her journey, she is filled with gratitude and a sense of purpose to give back in her own way.
LEARNING ABOUT COLLEGE OPPORTUNITIES
Growing up in East St. Louis, Illinois, college wasn’t something Joanna thought much about. Where she grew up in East St. Louis was what she called a “poverty-like environment”, and college wasn’t a discussion that she’d had with her parents.
“My mom never went to college or talked about it. But when I got to high school, I had some really good teachers that introduced me to the idea.”
One teacher, in particular, kept encouraging Joanna to explore Greenville University. At first, she resisted the idea, believing the university might not be the right fit for her.
“I’m not a religious person, so I thought I couldn’t go to Greenville. But I’m so happy that Greenville accepts all students,” she said.
However, the financial burden of college remained a significant obstacle. “I kept thinking, ‘I can’t pay for this,’” Joanna recalled.
HELP AT EVERY TURN
“Then my counselor said, ‘Write this essay, and we can find you a scholarship.’ Every time I thought there was no way, God was just making a way. Someone always had something in line for me to get there.”
Thanks to the Mosaic Leadership Diversity Scholarship, Joanna’s dream of attending Greenville University became a reality.
“Without the scholarship, I don’t think I would be where I’m today. It encouraged me to push myself further; to know I can do things, and that a financial barrier won’t stop me.”
Now, Joanna is thriving at Greenville University, majoring in elementary education with plans to become a teacher. She wants to eventually pursue a master’s degree and become a school counselor. She is passionate about giving back to her community and her alma mater.
“Even if I’m a teacher, and I know they don’t make much money, I still want to give back to Greenville in any way I can—whether it's sending love, donations, or even talking to future education students.”
VERY THANKFUL
Joanna’s story is a testament to the life-changing impact of donor-funded scholarships. When asked what she would say to the donors who helped make her education possible, she shared her deep appreciation: “I would thank them. They’ve made my life ten times better than it was a few years ago. I’m truly thankful.”
Joanna’s journey from uncertainty to empowerment is a poignant reminder of generosity’s ripple effect. Through donor support, students like Joanna pursue their dreams, overcome challenges, and, in turn, give back to the next generation.
