Greenville University alumnus Frank Spina '65 has published his latest book, Multiplying Divisions: The Fractious Nature of Israel, God's Elect People (Wipf & Stock, 2024). The book dives into the biblical theme of division, examining how Israel's historical divisions mirror the divisions within the modern Christian Church.
After a distinguished 46-year career as a professor of Old Testament at Seattle Pacific University, Spina continues to engage deeply with both academia and the church, a path that, he says, was inspired during his formative years at Greenville University.
Reflecting on his journey, Spina credits his time at Greenville as foundational to his intellectual and spiritual development.
"I guess I can say, without hyperbole, that Greenville changed my life," Spina shared. Initially drawn to the University by its strong baseball program and the influence of family members, Spina's career trajectory changed dramatically after taking a class from Stanley Walters, a professor of religion, in his first year at Greenville in 1961.
"I was absolutely mesmerized," Spina recalls. "For reasons I still cannot articulate, I was fascinated by Walters' lectures and approach. He had a profound influence on me."
Walters was one of many faculty members who left a lasting impression. Spina also speaks highly of professors like James Reinhard, Daniel Jensen, and campus pastor Don Bastian, who helped him grow intellectually and spiritually during his time at the University.
A LIFE OF TEACHING AND SERVICE
After graduating cum laude from Greenville, Spina pursued seminary training and later earned both his MA and PhD at the University of Michigan in Near Eastern Studies. His passion for teaching eventually led him to Seattle Pacific University, where he spent 46 years, a tenure that set a record at the institution.
Spina's profound connection to his students and love for teaching is evident in his long career, and he continues to inspire others through his writings, podcasts, and lectures.
Spina remains committed to serving the church and academic communities even after retiring. "I completely failed retirement," he jokes, referencing his active involvement as an Episcopal priest and his ongoing writing projects.
Multiplying Divisions emerged from a lecture he gave in 2008. The lecture focused on the disturbing story of a Levite's concubine in the final chapters of the Book of Judges. Through this story, Spina identifies the recurring biblical theme of division—an idea that resonates deeply in today's fractured church environment.
GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY'S MISSION AND SPINA'S LEGACY
Spina's career reflects Greenville University's mission of empowering students to serve the world through character and scholarship. His dedication to academic excellence and his deep engagement with both the church and the broader community echo the University's commitment to shaping students who are intellectually curious, spiritually grounded, and committed to service.
In Multiplying Divisions, Spina addresses the pressing need for unity within the church, a theme that aligns closely with Greenville's values of fostering community and spiritual growth. Spina calls for a "sanctified humility," encouraging Christians to embrace theological dialogue without vilifying those who disagree.
"We are so convinced we are right, and others are wrong," he notes, "but the church needs to realize that not everyone will agree—and that's okay."
