Mailee Smith ('00), Senior Director of Labor Policy at the Illinois Policy Institute, has forged an impactful career that has taken her from constitutional law to her current role in labor policy reform.

Her journey from Greenville University to a leading role in policy and legal advocacy exemplifies how a faith-based education and a service-driven mindset can prepare students for various professional fields.

Reflecting on her career, Smith shared, "I spent eight years litigating constitutional law issues, mostly involving bioethics, life, and end-of-life cases. Now, I focus on labor policy for a free-market think tank in Chicago, particularly examining government unions and their impact on Illinois residents, including taxpayers and families."

She has been instrumental in ensuring that public sector unions' decisions are in the best interest of all stakeholders.

GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY'S ROLE IN SHAPING HER PATH

Smith credits much of her success to the foundation laid at Greenville University. "Greenville's emphasis on servant leadership and service prepared me to approach every job with a mindset focused on serving God and others," she explained.

Smith's academic advisor, Professor Timothy Kneeland, encouraged her to pursue law school.

Professor Kneeland recalls Mailee Smith as an exceptional student, sharing, "Even as a first-year student, she was diving into archival material and doing real historical research." He adds that "she continues to amaze me," mentioning her work on an amicus brief for the U.S. Supreme Court and her leadership in Illinois. Kneeland notes that Mailee is "a terrific role model for young people coming to Greenville today."

"There were moments I was ready to give up, but he helped me stay the course and apply to law schools, which ultimately shaped my career path," Smith said.

Smith's involvement in the Washington D.C. Semester offered by Greenville University was another turning point.

"That experience allowed me to meet attorneys and key individuals in the legal community, which solidified my passion for law and policy," she recalled.

This experience and Greenville's solid academic reputation allowed her to be accepted into multiple prestigious law schools, ultimately earning a ride to Valparaiso University School of Law.

ADVICE FOR GREENVILLE STUDENTS

When asked what advice she would give current Greenville students, particularly those pursuing a law degree, Smith emphasized the importance of communication skills.

"Take as many communications and writing classes as possible. Success in law school relies heavily on the ability to articulate ideas both verbally and in writing."

Smith also stressed the value of extracurricular activities that provide a well-rounded college experience.

"Get involved in student government, internships, choir, or sports—anything that will diversify your experience and help build a strong resume."

GOD-CENTERED LEADERSHIP AND CAREER FULFILLMENT

Smith's career, though with challenges, is a testament to the power of Greenville's faith-based education.

"My belief has influenced every decision I've made in my career in servant leadership and God's plan for my life," she said. "Even though I could have chosen a career in the private sector, earning more money, I've found far greater fulfillment in the work I'm doing now, knowing it's God-honoring and making a real difference in people's lives."

Her advice to all Greenville students is rooted in the Bible: "Stay grounded in what the Bible says. It's God's truth that will guide you through life, not what others are saying. With that foundation, you'll be successful in whatever career path you choose because you'll be successful in God's eyes."

NAVIGATING CHALLENGES IN LABOR POLICY REFORM

As senior director of labor policy, Smith faces significant challenges.

"One of the most pressing issues we're working on is the school choice debate, ensuring that all students in Illinois have access to the best education for their needs, regardless of their economic status," Smith explained.

She also faces opposition from influential teachers' unions, particularly in Chicago, who exert significant political influence.

"These unions often dictate policies that affect families statewide, which makes advocating for individual families' rights challenging."

Despite these challenges, Smith remains committed to her mission, using her faith and servant leadership to guide her career.
