Meaningful relationships make a difference for Karsyn SloanKarsyn Sloan came to Greenville University two years ago to pursue a degree in agribusiness and become a farm production manager. But studying the business side of agriculture hasn’t been the only thing she’s learned here.

“The GU community has had a big influence on me,” said Karsyn, a native of Mt. Zion, IL. “People here have reached out to me and cared about me. You never go unseen or unheard here.

“The faith aspect also has been important to me. At Greenville, I’ve been able to grow my faith while I’ve grown academically. I feel more confident about what I believe; it’s more personal now.”

Receiving a Women In Leadership scholarship has eased her financial burden, allowing her to add a second major (in business management) to her academic load. She also joined Joyous Chaos improv team, the Outdoor Adventure Club, and has become a mentor in the Experience First program. This year, she’s serving as a resident assistant in University Hall, the new residence hall on campus.

Though she didn’t grow up on a farm, Karsyn spent considerable time on relatives’ crop and livestock operations. “Agriculture is an industry that contributes so much to our world,” she said. “I’ve been around farms all my life and I’m looking forward to helping farmers manage their operations better and become even more productive.”

She credits the supportive atmosphere on the GU campus for allowing her to thrive amid the normal challenges of college life.

“Greenville University is a place where you have genuine connections with staff and faculty members,” Karsyn said. “They’ve supported me when I’ve encountered challenges in school or life. Having those relationships makes me more confident going to them with questions. Because they know me, they can read me better and help me more.”
