When Jen Finley was presented with the opportunity to become the superintendent of the Wabash and New South Conferences of the Free Methodist Church, she had not anticipated such a role.

Yet, as doors opened, Jen responded to God's call with a heart full of obedience and faith; she now oversees 78 churches across Indiana, parts of Illinois, Kentucky, and Tennessee.

Jen is a class of 1998 alumna. Reflecting on her journey, she shares, "When God starts opening doors, we are to be obedient and say yes as He's leading."

SUPERINTENDENT WABASH CONFERENCE

She is the first woman to lead the Wabash Conference and the third woman elected to do so. Jen's leadership is a testament to her calling and the Free Methodist Church's openness to women in ministry.

Jen said, "I have felt very welcomed and haven't experienced the resistance I expected."

While Jen is forging a new path as a church leader, her ministry foundation began to take shape at Greenville University.

Greenville offered Jen a unique opportunity to blend her academic interests with her love for theology. She pursued degrees in psychology and religion, and her passion for reading led to an additional major in English.

"I grew up as a pastor's kid, so I always had an interest in the church. But Greenville allowed me to combine theology and psychology, which has been foundational in my journey," Jen recalls.

GREENVILLE UNIVERSITY SHAPED HER PATH

Her educational experience at Greenville and her work in mental health have shaped her approach to ministry, particularly in addressing mental health challenges within the church.

"Especially after the pandemic, we've seen anxiety and depression become even more prevalent, and the church is not immune. Our pastors and congregations are dealing with these issues, and I feel God has uniquely equipped me to address them," Jen explains.

Even as Jen transitioned from clinical counseling to pastoral ministry and eventually into her current leadership role, her experiences at Greenville and the guidance of critical mentors have been crucial to her spiritual and professional growth.

One such mentor, Dr. Brian Hartley, professor emeritus of religion at Greenville, co-officiated Jen's wedding with her father and has remained a profound influence throughout her life.

Hartley recalls that Jen was thoughtful and discerning as a student: "She was mature beyond her years, always carefully listening to others and thoughtfully engaging in discussions. I am extremely proud of her and pray for her daily. Seeing her take on this significant leadership role speaks volumes about her character and abilities."

LIFE AFTER COLLEGE

Jen's journey has been challenging, but she recognizes the importance of every step along the way. "When I was at Greenville, I wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to do with my life, but God doesn't waste anything. Every experience I've had has shaped my future and prepared me for this moment," she reflects.

A significant part of her development as a leader came through working with Bishop Kenny Martin, someone who saw potential in her even before she did.

"Kenny gave me opportunities. He saw a lot of giftedness and talents that I didn't see in myself," she recalls. He encouraged her to preach and lead within the church, opening doors that would eventually guide her into pastoral leadership.

Jen vividly remembers her first time preaching at John Wesley Free Methodist Church. After the sermon, Kenny approached her with tears in his eyes and told her that God had revealed she would be the next pastor. Though she laughed at the thought at the time, Kenny's belief in her and his openness to God's leading helped her grow into the role.

Reflecting on her leadership, Bishop Kenny Martin shared, "I have witnessed God's call on Superintendent Jen Finley's life. I was blessed to have her on the leadership team at John Wesley Free Methodist Church. When I met her, it was clear that God's hand had been on her. She had a teachable spirit, and her devoted love and service to the Lord, alongside her husband Jeff, is a great example. I do not doubt that superintendent. Jen is continuing her journey in steps ordered by God. She is beginning a fruitful ministry as superintendent that will multiply, remain, and bless the FMC family."

As the superintendent of the Wabash and New South Conferences, Jen continues to rely on God's guidance as she visits and supports each church, seeking His direction for every step of her leadership.

HOPE FOR THE FUTURE

Jen's vision for the future of the conferences under her care is rooted in being open to the Spirit's leadership. "I hope we can be fully open to how the Spirit moves through our churches, whether in church planting, developing new leaders, or strengthening communication and accountability. Ultimately, I want us to be truly led by the Spirit of God."

ADVICE FOR GREENVILLE STUDENTS

For current Greenville University students, Jen offers this advice: "Be open to whatever God has for you. Do not be discouraged if your path does not seem clear right away. Seek out mentors and advocates and say yes to opportunities. God will use everything you've learned and experienced to shape your future."
