GREENVILLE, IL — The Factory Theatre is excited to announce a ceremony to honor Dr. Cecelia Ulmer, professor emeritus and founder of the Factory Theatre. The event on Friday, October 18, 2024, will officially rename the theatre's house to recognize Dr. Ulmer's lifelong commitment to the arts, the University, and the wider community. Open house tours will begin at 9:00 AM, with the naming ceremony scheduled for 11:00 AM.
Dr. Ulmer joined the faculty at Greenville College in 1972, starting her distinguished career as a communications professor at just 22 years old. Over four decades, she became a beloved mentor and artistic leader, guiding numerous theatrical productions at the Factory Theatre. In 2012, she received the W. Richard Stephens Outstanding Faculty Award, one of the institution's highest honors to recognize important faculty work.
Dr. Ulmer's unique approach to theatre, rooted in a Christian worldview, offered a rare perspective in stage directing. Her influence extended beyond Greenville, as she worked with respected organizations such as the Opera Theatre of St. Louis and the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, directing and designing over 60 productions during her career.
"There would be no Factory Theatre without Dr. Ulmer," said Gret Tindall, Factory Theatre Production Manager. "We are excited to honor her by naming the theatre house after someone whose work has meant so much to the community."
Greenville University invites alums, students, and community members to attend this special event and celebrate Dr. Ulmer's immense contributions to the theatre arts and Greenville University.
