Greenville University student Brandon Shannon’s journey to GU is a story of resilience, growth, and transformation. Starting as a promising athlete, Brandon came to GU after a stint at East Mississippi Community College for its portrayal in the Netflix documentary Last Chance U. When COVID-19 disrupted his athletic path, Brandon found a new calling in campus leadership and mentorship.
TRANSITION FROM ATHLETE TO LEADER
Brandon originally came to GU to play football but eventually pivoted to track after sustaining multiple injuries. “Injuries take a toll on you,” he reflects, “so I knew it was time to step back.”
Brandon looked inward as he stepped away from sports, seeking a purpose beyond athletics. This search led him to become a resident assistant (RA), a role he describes as a turning point.
“Becoming an RA felt like my new calling. I wanted to find my identity outside of sports,” he says.
Janel Krabel, area coordinator for Hood, Mannoia, Tenney, and Kinney Halls, had positive things to say about working with Brandon.
“I have greatly enjoyed working with Brandon and watching him develop leadership skills in his role in residence life," said Krabel. “He views even the most mundane tasks with importance and works hard to ensure every student is seen and cared for well."
Brandon's dedication to his RA role eventually led him to pursue a graduate assistant (GA) position in Residence Life.
“This role will help me grow as a leader and mentor others,” he explains.
Johnny Hinton, the director of residence life and Brandon's supervisor, said that Brandon is a joy to work with.
"Brandon continues to be one of the most reliable and grounded people I've had the pleasure of working with," said Hinton. "As an undergraduate student, he was dedicated to serving students well, never losing his authenticity and integrity. I'm thankful he's back at GU as a GA to continue this legacy.”
ACADEMIC PURSUITS AND FUTURE GOALS
Brandon majored in exercise science as an undergraduate, focusing on kinesiology and physical therapy. He's now working towards a master's degree in education, specializing in curriculum and instruction. His ultimate goal is to design exercise and wellness programs tailored for school districts.
“I want to combine my passion for physical education with education,” he shares, envisioning a curriculum that supports students’ health and well-being.
STRENGTH IN FAITH AND PERSONAL REFLECTION
Brandon has found strength and clarity in his faith throughout his time at GU. Reflecting on his personal growth, he recalls a pivotal decision: his baptism at Greenville University.
“I never really had a strong foundation in faith before coming here. Over time, my experiences and conversations with mentors allowed me to rebuild my faith,” he says. "It was a physical commitment to Christ, something that felt right because of GU's pivotal role in my life."
MENTORSHIP AND IMPACT ON CAMPUS
Brandon has embraced roles that allow him to mentor others, especially in GU’s Experience First (EXPF) program. As a mentor in EXPF, he’s seen many students grow, with several becoming RAs or leaders themselves.
Brandon’s influence extends beyond formal roles; he’s a natural encourager, inspiring students to “go after things” and to trust the process of personal growth.
LOOKING AHEAD
Brandon’s journey is marked by patience, resilience, and an openness to finding purpose in unexpected places. He advises others to be patient and to focus on self-reflection.
“Life can be tough, but once you understand it, all you can do is laugh,” he says. With a heart for education and a genuine passion for helping students thrive, Brandon Shannon is on a path that aligns with Greenville University’s mission to nurture global citizens who are “seen, known, and inspired” in their journey with God.
