For Greenville University senior Joaquin Caceres, the journey from Peru to Greenville, Illinois, was more than a location change—it was the beginning of a transformative experience. As a business and marketing student, Joaquin embraced the challenges of being an international student and turned them into steppingstones to personal and professional growth.

"I never thought I would end up doing three internships," Joaquin shared. "I never imagined the opportunity in my advertising class would eventually lead me to an internship. But it's all part of God's plan. Keep working hard, stay positive, and trust that everything happens for a reason."

FINDING A STARTING POINT: A CLASSROOM CONNECTION

In 2023, Joaquin's story took a significant turn during a marketing class with Professor Jane Bell, who invited GU’s Assistant Vice President of Marketing, Terri Sunderland, to speak with students. Sunderland would later offer Joaquin an internship with the GU marketing team.

The offer didn’t surprise Bell. “Joaquin is an excellent student,” she said. “He works hard to learn all he can in the classroom. However, learning about marketing is not the same as doing marketing. For him to have the opportunity to build his marketing skills in a practicum is fantastic.”

GAINING EXPERIENCE ON CAMPUS

“Terri and Wyatt graciously guide our students and provide outstanding coaching as they learn how to do marketing,” said Bell.

"Terri was the first person to give me a chance," Joaquin said. "She introduced me to marketing and taught me how important it is to be responsible and professional from day one. Everything started with her."

Sunderland, in turn, describes Joaquin as driven, with much to prove.

“I have watched him work hard on the soccer field, in the classroom, and with his internship,” she said. “Joaco and I had several talks about work, not just as a proof of success—because that feeling is fleeting and will take a lifetime of chasing—but finding passion in what he does [and] what will give him true fulfillment in his work. I’m very proud of his work and the young man he’s become.”

OVERCOMING ADVERSITY: A SUMMER IN SPRINGFIELD

"I was away from home, struggling with expenses, and feeling out of place," he said. "But [GU] Professor Nathan Jenkins was a constant support, checking in on me and helping me navigate that period."

Though the experience was tough, Joaquin found growth in the adversity. "Even though it wasn't easy, I grew so much during my time in Springfield," he said.

Professor Jenkins had positive things to say about Joaquin as well.

“[Joaquin] is a very thoughtful and gracious young man with a lot of potential, and I believe he is going to accomplish many great things," Jenkins said.

EARLY LESSONS IN MARKETING AND NETWORKING

"[Networking] was nerve-wracking, but I knew it was a great opportunity," Joaquin recalled.

The conference marked a turning point for Joaquin, who began understanding the value of networking and making meaningful connections.

In July 2024, an unexpected opportunity arrived when Eisenhart offered Joaquin a remote internship. Joaquin was excited about the news: "It was exactly what I needed. Working remotely allowed me to balance my senior soccer season, final classes, and the internship."

A HEARTFELT REFLECTION

Looking back, Joaquin acknowledges the significance of each internship. "Every experience had its special moments," he said. "But my first internship with GU’s marketing department was special because it was the start of everything."

He also expressed deep gratitude to the mentors who shaped his journey. "Terry Sunderland, Professor Jane Bell, and Professor Nathan Jenkins—they all believed in me and supported me," he said. "I wouldn’t be where I am today without them."

Joaquin extends heartfelt gratitude to his family for their unwavering support, which has kept him going through every challenge and milestone in his academic journey and beyond.

As graduation approaches in May 2025, Joaquin is ready to take the next step. "I’m currently searching for a job," he shared. "Networking has been key throughout my journey, and I believe it will lead me to the next chapter."
