As the school year ends and the excitement of Commencement ramps up, a few seniors from the Class of 2025 sat down to share the moments, people, and growth that have shaped their time on campus.

FINDING PURPOSE – AND EACH OTHER

For Ethan Greene, a criminal justice major and former member of the bass fishing team, the journey started years ago at a youth retreat. It was there he first heard about GU. A single campus tour sealed the deal.

“I knew I didn’t want to be a number. I wanted community,” he said. “Greenville was the only school I toured. I didn’t need to look anywhere else.”

The theme of being seen, known, and inspired came up repeatedly. James Goodenow, a marketing major with a theology minor, said, "I’ve been able to grow with people. I’ve learned to be confident in who I am. I’m not the quiet kid I was when I came here."

For many students, community wasn’t just found in the classroom or on campus—it was built through late-night movie nights, team trips, and shared struggles. And it was often those very struggles that became turning points.

Keegan Daughhetee, an educational studies major, came to GU seeking more than a degree—she came to redefine herself. “I wanted to start fresh, away from expectations. GU shaped me into the person I am today. I’ve matured, grown in confidence, and found joy in who I’m becoming.”

MENTORSHIP THAT MATTERS

Each student listed professors, coaches, and staff members who didn’t just teach but showed up as the most impactful part of their GU experience.

“Every one of my professors poured into me,” Ethan said. “They helped me figure out what I wanted to do, but more importantly, they believed in me even when I didn’t.”

James echoed that, reflecting on his deep respect for professors like Keeli Snow and Breck Nelson, who went out of their way to connect. “I’ve had lunch with my professors. That’s not normal. That’s GU,” he said.

For some students, the mentorship was spiritual. Olivia Mansfield, graduating with a degree in educational studies, credits Dr. Tracy Hall, Professor Laura Schaub, Cindy Smith, President Suzanne Davis, and many others for helping her deepen her faith and walk in purpose.

“They didn’t just guide me—they prayed with me, over me. Greenville isn’t just a place that talks about faith; they live it.”

FAITH IN ACTION

Students spoke candidly about how GU challenged them academically, spiritually, and personally. For Rafael Navas Gascon, an international student from Spain, those challenges were life-changing.

“When I came here, I was shy and unsure,” Rafael said. “Now I feel ready. Spiritually, I’ve grown closer to God. I’ve built lifelong friendships. I feel seen.”

Greenville's character, service, and transformation mission wasn’t just a brochure slogan—it played out in real-time. Through internships, clubs, worship experiences, and conversations across campus, students discovered what they’re called to do and who they’re called to be.

ADVICE FOR WHAT’S NEXT

With a mix of joy and nostalgia, the seniors offered wisdom for the incoming class.

“Talk to people,” Ethan said simply. “Even if it’s scary. That’s how you grow.”

“Don’t waste your time here,” James added. “It goes faster than you think.”

“Find people who want what’s best for you,” Keegan said. “That’s where transformation begins.”

And Olivia? She smiled and said plainly: "Love yourself—just as Christ loves you."

The answers were heartfelt and raw when asked to summarize their time at GU in one sentence.

“It prepared me to make lifelong connections,” Ethan said.

“Very impactful. I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” said James.

“Find your purpose. Find your people,” Keegan offered.

Olivia paused before saying, "Obedience, discipleship, the love of God reflected in a Christlike community."

As the Class of 2025 prepares to leave, it’s clear that Greenville University has left its mark through relationships that feel more like family and a campus that many still call home.
