I was not merely crossing the Atlantic when I left Palma de Mallorca, Spain, but I was beginning a new chapter in my life. As a senior exchange student at Greenville University, I am drawn to adventure and opportunity. I had my first American experience when I spent a year with a host family in Wisconsin at age 16.
That year felt like everything was new. The memories I made could have come from a movie. From attending my first Homecoming and prom to sledding behind a car in the Wisconsin snow, each day felt like a story.
While playing soccer, I formed lasting friendships.
My host family supported me and taught me the importance of perseverance and flexibility. During that experience, I realized I wanted to pursue my college education in the United States.
A Leap Toward Greenville
When it came time to choose a university, Greenville stood out. I remember seeing pictures and videos, and once I visited campus, I knew I didn't need to look anywhere else. The warm welcome of the community, the opportunity to continue playing soccer, and the supportive environment at Greenville all drew me here.
The change, however, was not without challenges. Moving to a new country meant adapting to a different academic system, adjusting to small-town life, and balancing the responsibilities of being both a student and an athlete. At first, it was overwhelming. Yet, as in my first year in Wisconsin, I relied on friendships, teammates, and professors to find my footing.
Expanding With Opportunity
GU has already given me many milestones. On the soccer pitch, my teammates and I rejoiced when we won the SLIAC championship — a moment I will never forget, and one that deepened my sense of belonging. Off the field, I've shared unforgettable moments — nights out with friends, watching a solar eclipse, even traveling to Puerto Rico — experiences that remind me why I chose Greenville.
This semester, I took another step forward by joining the marketing department as an intern. The opportunity has introduced me to new skills and career possibilities. I have discovered the creativity and strategy involved in marketing, and I am becoming part of that world.
The chance has enlightened me to new skills and new career opportunities. I have learned the extent of creativity and strategy involved in marketing, adding that "I can see myself becoming that."
As a student who once dreamed of living in another country, working in a GU department has become a milestone toward my future.
Looking Ahead
When I took the daring step of leaving Spain, my goal was to get an education — but I gained much more than that. Greenville University has given me a time of significant growth — providing me with a community, a team, and a second home.
I still remember the moment I first arrived on campus: I felt immediately that this was where I belonged. I am confident that it was the right choice. Greenville is a unique place — one that invites students to ask themselves who they can become.
