A New View on Work
As the semester comes to a close, I’ve been reflecting on my time in Greenville University’s Marketing & Communications Department—an experience that reshaped the way I see writing completely. Before this internship, writing felt like a chore, something reserved for homework, notes, or class assignments. I never once considered it a genuine tool of expression.
That changed quickly. I discovered that writing is far more than putting words in order—it’s a powerful way to communicate who you are and what you think. The more I wrote, the clearer and more confident my voice became.
Building Professional Foundations
This internship strengthened my communication skills, but it did something even more important: it helped me build the foundation of professionalism I’ll need wherever I go next. I learned the weight of responsibility, the importance of teamwork, and the discipline required to meet deadlines consistently.
One of the most transformative parts of the job was interviewing students, faculty, and alumni. Approaching people used to intimidate me. Now, I feel far more confident starting conversations and guiding interviews to uncover meaningful stories. That sense of connection—of drawing out the heart of someone’s experience—is something I couldn’t have learned from a textbook.
This has also been my first real look into the marketing world. From drafting full stories to watching how ideas turn into strategy, I’ve been learning the field from the ground up.
The Critical Eye and the Joy of the Work
The most important lesson I’m taking with me is just how impactful marketing can be. A single idea, image, or phrase can catch someone’s attention and shape how they see a brand—or inspire them to look closer.
Before this internship, ads were background noise. Now I analyze everything:
Who is the intended audience?
What works? What doesn’t?
What message are they trying to send—and how would I improve it?
This shift in thinking is something I’ll use for the rest of my life. The real fulfillment of this internship comes from completing a story, meeting an objective, and seeing the work published—knowing it matters.
Moving Forward With Purpose
Looking ahead, this internship did exactly what a GU experience promises: it helped clarify my direction and strengthened my sense of calling. I’ve uncovered a genuine gift for communication and built confidence in my ability to manage professional responsibilities with excellence.
I hope future students considering an internship with Marketing & Communications take the leap. This isn’t just a requirement—it’s an opportunity to grow, gain confidence, and learn to see the world with a sharper eye.
I’m grateful for what I’ve learned, excited for what’s ahead, and thankful for the momentum this experience has given me.
