What began as a new program just four years ago has quickly become a story of commitment, growth, and shared purpose. Greenville University’s men’s gymnastics team has qualified for the NCAA Championships for the second time in program history, a testament to the dedication of the student-athletes who helped shape the program from its earliest days.
Head Coach Zach Peters said leading this team onto the national stage represents both a competitive achievement and a meaningful milestone for the community they have built together.

The Panthers will compete in the NCAA Championships at the State Farm Center in Champaign, Illinois, on Friday, April 17, at 1 p.m. CT, with finals scheduled for Saturday evening. The national meet on Friday will feature 12 teams split into two sessions, with the top three advancing to the finals. Both days of the championship will be featured on ESPN+.
Competing alongside nationally recognized programs such as Navy and Stanford, Greenville continues to prove that dedication, strong mentorship, and a commitment to growth can position student-athletes to succeed at the highest level of collegiate competition.
Peters joined Greenville University in 2021 to launch its men’s gymnastics program. A former scholarship gymnast at the University of Nebraska, he saw coaching at a Christian university as an opportunity live out his faith.
“I knew eventually someday I might want to coach gymnastics,” Peters said. “Seeing that Greenville was a private Christian school, it felt like I could still live missionally through coaching and mentoring students.”

Earlier this month, the Panthers captured an ECAC conference championship at Army, West Point Academy in West Point, New York, securing their spot in this weekend’s championship meet.
“It took a lot of hard work to be where we’re at,” Peters added. “Being a new program, nothing is guaranteed. Our athletes have invested a lot to help build something lasting.”
Throughout the season, Peters and his athletes faced a key challenge: balancing the difficulty of the routine with consistency. While the team began the year pursuing highly technical routines, Peters ultimately decided to simplify certain elements to improve execution.
“Our guys were capable of the harder skills, but we had to swallow our pride a little bit and focus on cleaner routines,” he said. “They trusted the process, and it paid off. This has been the best year of the program so far.”
At the NCAA Championships, the Panthers will compete across six events: floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and high bar. Peters noted particular confidence in the team’s performance on parallel bars, where Greenville ranks sixth nationally.
Beyond rankings and results, the competition holds special significance for the program’s first recruiting class. Many of the seniors competing helped lay the foundation for Greenville’s gymnastics culture.
“This is the original class’s final meet,” Peters said. “They’ve put in the time, and what they’ve built has created opportunities for future athletes.”
For Peters, success ultimately extends beyond the podium. He emphasizes growth, discipline, and faith as central elements of the team’s identity.
“We talk a lot about pursuing excellence in all areas of life: spiritually, academically, and athletically,” Peters said. “At the end of the day, we want every athlete competing to be safe and perform their best.”
Peters also expressed gratitude for the opportunity Greenville has provided both him and his athletes.
“Greenville choosing to start this program changed my life,” he said. “Many of our athletes might not have had the opportunity to compete in college without it. Being able to compete at this level, represent our faith, and do what we love — it truly feels like a dream come true.”
