From Greenville to Global Impact: Jessica Ray’s Calling to Empower Families

On any given morning, Jessica Ray moves from meeting to meeting. She casts vision, guides strategy, and leads teams worldwide.

She currently lives in a historic home in Kansas City with her husband, daughter, and pets. Before she answered the calling to help empower families, her path to leadership began not in the boardroom but at Greenville College (now University).

Ray graduated in 2001 with a degree in business marketing and arrived on campus with clarity and determination. She knew her path early; studying business was never a question. What she didn’t yet know was how that path would evolve into a life centered on service, leadership, and global impact.

Finding Her Place at GU

Ray’s introduction to Greenville came through a small but growing pipeline of students from CrossPoint Christian School in Union, MO. While others transferred or moved on, she stayed all four years. She was drawn by opportunities to lead and grow.

Immersed in campus life, she worked in the marketing department. She also took on leadership roles in Agapefest, a Christian music festival sponsored by the school. From managing vendor operations to overseeing finances, Ray built skills she would use throughout her career.

“I was involved in everything,” she said. “Those experiences mattered. They kept me here.”

That hands-on involvement—paired with meaningful mentorship—laid a foundation that extended far beyond the classroom.

A Career Shift Toward Purpose

After graduation, Ray entered the business world, spending 15 years in high-end retail as a sales manager, buyer, and planner. But over time, something shifted.

She wanted her work to matter more deeply.

That calling sparked her move to the nonprofit sector. Now, as president of GO International, Ray leads global initiatives to empower families and communities.

Her guiding philosophy is clear: empowerment, not dependency, remains central to her work.

“I’ve always wanted to care for people in a way that’s dignified,” Ray said. “It’s about creating opportunities for people to thrive—not just meeting immediate needs.”

Redefining What It Means to Help

Through her leadership, Ray has helped launch programs that are changing international aid. The focus is now on 'orphan prevention'—supporting families so children never have to enter institutional care. Under her direction, pilot programs have enabled hundreds of families to stay together.

More than 80 percent of children in orphanages worldwide have living parents. For Ray, that statistic isn’t just surprising—it’s a call to action.

Her team focuses on education, job training, health, and spiritual growth. This equips families to achieve stability and independence.

“It’s about breaking cycles—of poverty, trauma, and separation—and replacing them with something stronger,” she said.

Leading with Faith and Conviction

Ray’s work reflects values she first saw at Greenville: faith, service, and a commitment to developing the whole person.

Now serving on Greenville’s Board of Trustees, she remains deeply connected to the University’s mission.

“I think education still matters,” she said. “And Christian education really matters in our current climate. It’s about forming students who know they can make an impact—that they’re not stuck where they are.”

For Ray, that formation isn’t theoretical. It’s lived daily—in boardrooms, in communities around the world, and in the lives of the families her organization serves.

Advice for the Next Generation

When asked what guidance she would offer current students, her answer is both practical and deeply personal:

Find what you’re passionate about—and pursue it fully.

“There’s a difference between doing something meaningful and doing something you actually care about,” she said. “When those align, that’s where impact really happens.”

It’s a lesson she’s lived—and one that continues to shape her leadership today.

A Life of Impact

Ray’s journey, from student leader to global strategist, exemplifies how purpose-driven leadership empowers change. But in her downtime, Ray enjoys the simplest things, like gardening, camping, hiking, and a good book.

“The best book I’ve read recently was ‘Theo of Golden’,” said Ray.

At Greenville, she seized opportunities.

In her career, she found her calling.

And through her work, she’s helping others find the same. She is building stronger families, healthier communities, and a future shaped by dignity, faith, and hope.
