Business Students Experience the Federal Reserve

Published: April 13, 2021

The Greenville College Department of Business is taking steps to integrate their classes with hands-on learning off campus. This past Thursday, November 13, Professor Ron Cooks Introduction to Business class and Professor Jane Bells Management of Organizations class joined together for a tour of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis and were able to attend the brand new interactive Inside the Economy Museum. The group consisted of forty-four students of every age, so this trip was directed toward a broad range of students. Not only were the students able to see these fascinating sites, they were able to listen to and converse with the Federal Director and First National Bank President, Ernie Chappel, as well as the VP of Bank Auditing Mike Renfro and VP of Public Relations Karen Branding. These influential members of the bank discussed their personal work, as well as career opportunities for students.

This unique experience allowed the students not only to see and hear how the Federal Reserve functions, they were able to experience it first-hand. The Inside the Economy Museum opened in late September and has ninety-five interactive exhibits that highlight different aspects of the economy and how society drives it. By taking these students outside of the classroom, the professors are helping them to gain a realistic perspective of todays business world.

This trip highlights Greenvilles convenient proximity to St. Louis. Students at Greenville College are only forty-five miles from downtown St. Louis, which provides endless opportunities for city experiences. Classes in many departments on campus have taken trips to the city for various learning events, and the Department of Business Department is just one example. Being near the city, yet living in cozy Greenville allows for a wonderful juxtaposition of city experiences and small-town connections for the college students.

This trip is not the first of its kind for the Deparment of Business. Earlier this month, ten Sports Marketing students had the opportunity to travel to the University of Illinois in Champaign to meet with four members of the Visit Champaign County Visitors Bureau and six members of the University of Illinois Department of Athletics staff. In the spring of 2014, twenty-eight Advertising students were able to take the train to Chicago to visit several advertising agencies, including Leo Burnett and Razorfish, over a two-day trip.

One key outcome from this trip was for students to learn more about the workforce before entering it. Through hands-on experience and interaction with leaders at the Fed, they will be able to make better decisions about how to focus their studies at Greenville College and where to direct their future job search after graduation.
