IN MEMORY: BISHOP EMERITUS DONALD N. BASTIAN (1925-2024)

A PASTOR’S PASTOR

Known as a “pastor’s pastor,” Bastian had a heart for pastors, evidenced in blog Just Call Me Pastor. He reminded them always of their divine help. “Why should any leader go off course when we have the world's best leader ever for an example and a source of renewing energy, Jesus Christ the Lord?” he once said.

As recently as last year, Bastian confessed his heartfelt prayer, “ . . . that a hundred young people in our denomination will commit themselves to a life in ministry. Praise is due to men and women who become pastors after they have had another career, but I long specifically for young people to answer the call of Christ and spend the whole of their lives for the cause of the Gospel.”

Bastian’s ministry was marked by his eloquent preaching, compassionate pastoral care, and astute administrative abilities. An inspired preacher and Bible teacher, he oversaw of the church with wisdom and care. He authored numerous books including The Pastor’s First Love and Other Essays On a High and Holy Calling and God’s House Rules: Seven Biblical Truths to Transform and Enrich your Family, and Counterfeit: The Lie of Living Together Unmarried.
