Water Quality Researchers Earn Top Honors For PresentationTwo Greenville University summer research students presented their work this month at a meeting of the American Chemistry Society.

Hannah Frerker 19 and Jonathon Adams 18 traveled to the University of Illinois to join students from U of I, Purdue, University of Indiana, Southern Illinois University and others for a Saturday of poster presentations. Hannah and Jonathons poster described their work testing water from nine municipal sources and 25 private wells in the Greenville area this summer. They examined levels of bacteria, metals and pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs).

Chemistry faculty from various universities judged participating students on the quality of their presentations and delivery as well as the content of their posters and their ability to respond to questions with substantive answers.

Eight of the 48 teams presenting received Outstanding Research Presentation awards; Hannah and Jonathon came home with one of them.

This has given Hannah and Jonathan a big confidence boost, says Darrell Iler, chemistry department chair at Greenville University. It indicates to them that they are doing something important that matters, and that others recognize that.

Hannah and Jonathon conducted their research as part of the Universitys eighth summer of science research. The summer program contributes to the Universitys goal of engaging all students in meaningful hands-on work within their fields starting early in their college careers.
